Cocktail's New Cube: It's Anything But Square

Even though we San Franciscans are chilly most of the year, during these rare scorching days of summer, it's hard not to occasionally fantasize about a cold beverage, filled to the top with glistening, frosty ice cubes. We don't usually spend a lot of time thinking about ice, but I can assure you that many of city's bartenders do whether it's cubed, spheroid, chipped, shaved or crushed.

The Best Absinthe Cocktails in Town

It was great to see last week's absinthe column by the New York Times' Eric Asimov. It was also great to be mentioned in his corresponding blog post. Just before the column ran, he came into town for a couple of nights, and on one of them I took him round to a couple of bars and later for dinner at RN74.

Don't Buy Art, Buy Drinks: Friday at Alembic and Beretta

With my rapidly advancing age, marital state and experience working at Cantina on many Fridays over the last year, I have largely stopped going out on weekend nights. Bars are just too crowded, too loud. You know . . . too "too." And I don't even have kids.

But I had friend in town from LA this weekend who was interested in the SF cocktail scene, so Friday was a good chance to observe the weekend nightlife at a couple of the city's more happening cocktail outposts.

Thomas Waugh's Last Night at Alembic

I went into the Alembic last weekend to catch bartender Thomas Waugh on his last night. The ambitious young Waugh is heading off to the bright lights and no-2 AM-close of New York City, where he's already arranged to work shifts at such famous joints as PDT and Death and Company. Though his ultimate ambition is to end up in London, I have a feeling he'll be in the Big Apple for a while, so look for him on your next trip. As for SF, who will be our next Waugh?
