Castro Street Fair

Everyone loves a party, and no neighborhood more than the Castro. This past Sunday, the masses gathered for the last big bash before Halloween. (If there even is a party this Halloween. We’ll see.)

The fair was the usual mix of gay guys and gals, drag queens and trannies, leather daddies and cubs, and a sprinkling of straights for good measure.

Elizabeth Hurley Thinks Pink

I snagged some precious green room time with Elizabeth Hurley yesterday while the Brit model-actress was in town en route to LA for a packed public appearance at the Bloomingdale’s Westfield San Francisco Centre. For the past eight years, Hurley has hit the road in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote Estée Lauder’s pink products, which help raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Institute (Hurley’s own grandmother died of breast cancer in the '70s). So did the 42-year-old spokesmodel look as good in person as she does on film? Even better.

B.R. Cohn Fall Concert

Sunday was a day of rock n’ roll among the vines at B.R. Cohn Winery on Old Sonoma Highway, Sonoma. I ventured to the winery-turned-rock venue for day two of a weekend of music and fundraising. The 250-seater amphitheatre was packed to the gills with music lovers and wine lovers who rocked, rolled and swirled to the sounds of the day.

Helmut Lang Opening

I just got back from hanging out with Emerson, Tony and Doug—the helpful hipster crew at the new downtown Helmut Lang store—who gave me the grand tour of the sleek, industrial space. It opened four days ago at 120 Maiden Lane and is only the second boutique of the Austrian-born designer’s to open in the U.S. (the other is on Melrose Avenue in LA). The store’s undone aesthetic is in line with Lang’s trademark minimalist designs. From the outside, you might not even realize it’s open. There’s no sign and the raw, three-story building looks very New York industrial with lots of glass, exposed air conditioning tubes, unpainted dry walls and concrete floors.
