All About Garum, the Ancient Secret Ingredient Now Trending on Menus

You may have noticed that the word "garum" has been making multiple appearances in restaurants' ingredient lists around town. You may have even asked a server about it. And if you haven't noticed it before, you're likely to now. You'll see it appear in dishes at Verbena, Coi, State Bird Provisions, Plum, and many other Bay Area restaurants.

There's been a mini boom in new and revamped Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area lately, in case you weren't aware, and we're here to alert you to five of the most recent additions.

The big news item of the brand new year is the takeover of the former Lusty Lady space in North Beach by the team of Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield, marking their second west coast project in eight months. Also, Little Skillet has expanded into the next-door space with Victory Hall, and B-Side BBQ in Oakland is moving to Uptown.
