Hot Tickets: Must-See Shows in March and April

It feels like it was just yesterday when the festival touring circuit was over. Well, the winter hibernation is over, and with festivals like SXSW, Coachella, Sasquatch and Bonnaroo just around the corner, there are some big music decisions to make on the home front. Here are our March and April suggestions.

Quasi, The Independent, 3/10: These Portland staples have been touring and impressing fans since '93. Over the years, they've collectively toured and/or recorded with Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Built to Spill, Bright Eyes, and many others.

The Dodos Go Bananas at Bimbo's

Although The Dodos have been on our radar for quite some time, we've kind of taken having these guys in our backyard for granted. We recently featured them in our Hot 20 Under 40, and not to toot our own horn, but man were we right. Making their last stop of the stateside leg of the tour really was kind of sentimental for them and you could really tell that they put their heart and soul into every note. But emotions aside, these guys (consisting of singer/guitarist Meric Long, drummer Logan Kroeber, and newbie on the vibraphones Keaton Snyder) were polished to perfection.

Have Yourself A Downbeat Alt. Rock Christmas?

“It can’t be all cheer and happiness, there has to be some suicidal depression and family hatred and alcoholism,” Aimee Mann told the crowd at Bimbo’s Sunday night at the scene of her Third Annual Christmas show. She then launched into her “hit” of sullen melancholy, “Save Me.”

Depression, alcoholism and hatred are what you might expect from Aimee Mann, holiday cheer and jovial whimsy, not so much. But apparently she’s been doing these Christmastime variety shows all over the place and it’s a charming way to espy another side of the subdued singer songwriter.
