Win Tickets to See Funk Soul Brother Maceo Parker

Maceo Parker, the alto sax legend who's played funk with the best of them—James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins—is bringing his red-hot licks and slinky, fluid style to the afterparty for this year's Freedom in the Groove SFJAZZ Gala

Ticket Giveaway: Blue Bear School of Music's Youth Music Benefit featuring the funky METERS!

San Francisco has long been a breeding ground for talented musicians, and thankfully for veteran organizations like the Blue Bear School of Music–which nurtures beginners and helps get seasoned players off their butts and on stage where they belong–that fact isn't likely to fade anytime soon.

Beach House @ Bimbo's

Were you into Teen Dream? Do you swoon over Victoria Legrand’s grandiose God-given talent? If you answered yes to either of the previous questions, last night would have been equivalent to heaven. Spinning glitter diamond piñatas and lighting mishaps did not distract the eager crowd from swaying back and forth as they rolled through one song after another for almost an hour and a half. A woman of few words, Legrand got a few bad jokes in, but it was clear their intention was to get in as much music in as humanly possible, most new, but some oldies but goodies…and that didn’t go unappreciated. At the end of the night, the sold-out crowd staggered out the doors, heads spinning in stunned bewilderment.

Love Is Real: Beach House Plays Bimbo’s

Ride the undulating “whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh”s of “Real Love” off Beach House’s third album, Teen Dream (Sub Pop), and you’ll find yourself deep in the ether, though Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand don’t seem attached to any demographic in particular. As a matter of fact, the concerns of such songs as “Real Love,” “10 Mile Stereo,” “Better Times,” “Lover of Mine,” and “Used to Be” seem rooted in a teenage world of long ago and far away, regarded through the prism of adulthood.

Cool School: Bebel Gilberto Mixes It Up At Bimbo’s

New bossa nova doyenne Bebel Gilberto has done a lot of growing since her SF debut back at the turn of the century at Bimbo’s 365 Club. Her 2000 debut, Tanto Tempo, had just come out on Ziriguiboom and local imprint Six Degrees and the recording was only beginning to reach the ears of both Brazilian music fans and electronica coolios, both world pop aficionados and lovers of well-chilled downtempo beats.

Fly With The Raveonettes at Bimbo's Tonight

Let the dreamtime vocals and metallic synths wash over you. Wallow in Ray Orbison romanticism and Link Wray guitar-tough cool. NYC-by-way-of-Copenhagen duo the Raveonettes have strayed a bit as of late, away from the eerily claustrophic shoegaze bubblegum of the Jesus and Mary Chain, though the psychotic melodies remain on the twosome’s latest, In and Out of Control (Vice).

We caught up with Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner via e-mail on the cusp of their SF show Monday, Nov. 9, at Bimbo’s 365 Club.

St. Vincent At Bimbo’s: More Impressive Than The Album

The petite wide-eyed, curly-haired, crimson-lipped beauty took center stage last night, clearly dominating over all of her male counterparts. Premiering her new album Actor, Miss Annie Clark demanded attention from start to finish, manipulating her guitar in ways that were mesmerizing at the very least. The riffs were hard, everything was perfectly timed, embarrassing tour stories were told, and unfortunately, the time passed quickly. Forget the big stages though; St. Vincent is a cozy, in-your-living-room kind of show. Her sound could be easily lost on a big stage if it wasn’t for her striking demeanor.

Mirah at Bimbo's Last Night: An Oldie But Goodie

Mirah successfully cast the entire audience into a lo-fi indie trance last night at Bimbo's, packing her set with tons from new album (a)spera. It was the most behaved audience we've ever seen - not so much as a peep or a photography flash in between songs.  This didn't go unnoticed -- Mirah graciously thanked her loyal fans for the quiet and respect.
