A little over a month ago, we announced Madewell was opening shop in San Francisco. If you know crafty Madewell, you should expect that this will be no ordinary store — or opening party. To celebrate its San Francisco debut, Madewell and 7x7 teamed up to curate a local line-up to be showcased at the party this Thursday. We combed the city's best stores for some cool goods that complement the brand's youthful flair.
For all you last minute shoppers out there, we've got your back. We pulled together a bundle of hip mom-essentials from seven fantastic local boutiques, to mix, match and make her smile.
Local artist Maria Forde is a master of depicting the awkward side of the human psyche. In the past, her delicate renderings captured her family and friends offering nuggets of advice in the series Advice Portraits, such as "Don't scrape off a scab or you will get Blood-Poisoning". In her Wigs zine, Forde's quirky, keen eye lovingly examines humanity's obsession with wigs, while other self-published art depicts Marlon Brando's struggles, before he was fat and weird, in a goofy, poignant comic series named after the acting legend.
There's no shortage of excuses to party these next few weeks, but if you're looking for another one, it might behoove you to check out the Curiosity Shoppe this Thursday. They'll be celebrating the opening of Jason Munn's (aka the artist behind Chronicle Books' The Small Stakes) latest show in their gallery, featuring his pleasantly minimal limited-edition rock posters.
In case you can't tell, we were all over the Mission this week. After stumbling upon Monument's new digs we headed down to The Curiosity Shoppe to get a little peek at artists Lisa Congdon and Mati McDonaugh's new exhibit in the store's gallery. Entitled "Little Pink Houses", the collaboration features a healthy dose of birds, branches, and electric shocks of pink - all design details we adore.
There are always curiosities to behold in the Mission (thanks, crackheads!) but perhaps few as enjoyable as furniture designer Thomas Wold's art installations. A combination of furniture, lighting effects and various ideas the artist has been working on over the years, each installation is actually a grouping of the Wold's individual pieces. The official opening party for "Come Together: New Installations by Thomas Wold" is taking place this Friday the 16th from 6 to 8pm, at ye olde purveyor of all things delightfully curious, The Curiosity Shoppe.
Chances are you've seen one of Oakland designer Jason Munn's music posters, especially if you went to the Treasure Island Music Festival (the whole ship/island concept was his idea). Or , perhaps, you've spun a CD with his art on it. Munn's SF-based design studio, The Small Stakes, has created posters, magazine graphics, CD art and book covers for bands like, Beck, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, and locals Rogue Wave.
