DIY Holiday Decor with Creative Bug

Dip-Dye Napkins

The DIY craze has everyone and their mothers attempting domestic design pursuits—most of which lead to tragic ends. Here to lend some expert guidance is Creative Bug, a Bay Area-based hub for video tutorials that virtually guarantee success, from pom pom garlands to screenprinting. We asked founder Kelly Wilkinson for a fool-proof project to brighten up your holiday table: Try your hand at dip-dyed napkins for a saturated pop of color at your next soiree.

Look of the Week: Local Valentine's Gifts for Her

This year, skip the flowers and box chocolates and, instead, step it up with a thoughtful gift that's perfect for her. We pulled from SF's best and found hip, fun Valentine's Day gifts for every personality.

DIY Beer: How To Get Started Homebrewing

If you love craft beer and have ever thought about trying your hand at homebrewing, there has never been a better place or time to get started than right here and now. There are great local DIY courses and other resources to help you brew your first batch and Beer West Magazine awarded San Francisco the title of "Best Beer City" this year in large part because of the "distinct energy surrounding the craft beer scene and the cohesive way it’s represented throughout the city.” Simply put: people here have beer skills.

New Classes at Workshop SF: Sewing Handbags, Altering Jeans, Beauty School Rebel, Screen Printing, DIY Feather Jewelry + More

If you've never been, you can think of Workshop SF as a DIY/design lover's Chuck E. Cheese academy. The Etsy-meets-rock-n-roll lab is quietly nestled in Western Addition, and is fueled with the creative innovation of founder, Kelly Malone (SF's DIY do-gooder). The space is the perfect learning environment for all levels of hands-on DIYers, and the hip roster of workshops offer everything but your mom's home-ec class.

This August, Workshop is focusing on fun, stylish classes like the Blue Jean Rehab and Makeup Mastery: Smokey Eyes + Nude Lips. Every class is under $60 (most are $40), and they are conveniently held on evenings and weekends. Anyone can get in on the maker movement, just start with these awesome classes.

So, clear your schedule for this Saturday's FREE party, where you'll have hands-on interaction with the oh-so-popular DIY culture of homemade, homespun goodness.

Kelly Malone's Workshop: A DIY Haven

In 2007 Kelly Malone had an enviable job as a stylist for Victoria’s Secret and was in New York City when she received a fateful phone call from her San Francisco doctor. “He told me I had ovarian cancer,” says the Philly native, who moved to SF in 2005 to work as a visual merchandiser for Gap, Inc. The then-33-year-old promptly quit VS and underwent chemotherapy. “I didn’t want to sit at home and feel sorry for myself, so I threw a party in my backyard for all my friends to sell their handmade crafts.”

Find Handmade Treasures at the Renegade Craft Fair

Shopping in Union Square may be convenient, but these days, it's all about unique, handcrafted goods. Digging through Etsy can be overwhelming, but the FREE Renegade Craft Fair will make your treasure hunt a little easier by bringing 200 crafters, artists, designers, and more to the Fort Mason Center this weekend, July 18 & 19 (11a - 7p).

Renegade Craft Fair Returns This Weekend

Yeehaw! It seems to be shaping into a peach of a weekend. True, it's only Tuesday, but we're not going to let a little detail like that get us down. The weather report calls for clear blue skies and mid-70s and up for the rest of the week, plus we've got all sorts of fun activities to look forward to. Sunday we'll be participating in AIDS Walk San Francisco taking place in Golden Gate Park. Will you be there? There's still time to sign up if you'd like to join in...
