Confession: I'd never been to HD Buttercup. Though I enjoy interiors, my place is packed solid, so I don't furniture window shop much, however I do want a new bed...When I caught wind of the SOMA furniture store's half-yearly sale I rode over and disappeared from reality for about a half-hour.
One of the beauties of San Francisco is that you can dig up quality accoutrements in some pretty unexpected places--like a tiny garage in the Castro. We've recently become hip to Mid Century Mobler, a passionately-curated collection of gorgeous furniture hand picked by Julian and Gabe, two design-obsessed friends who work out of said Castro garage.
It's been a few weeks since we last made our way over to the Mish, so if this news hits you a little late, our apologies. However if you're like us and haven't been to the neighborhood in a bit, you might be surprised to find that Mid-Century Modern furniture boutique Monument is no longer occupying the storefront at 572 Valencia Street. Not to fear, they've just moved a stone's throw away to a new, much larger space literally right across the street at 573 Valencia (former location of Architectural Elements).
While most people seem to have barbeque and sailing on their minds for this fair-weathered weekend, we're thinking bargains and sale-ing, instead. Tops on our list is McGuire Furniture's first sample sale in San Francisco ever. Items are priced to move at up to 70% the retail price, and even though the sale actually started Thursday (dang, apologies for the late notice) new items are being trucked in daily, so you're still bound to find a sweet deal. The sale is open today (Friday) until 5pm and continues on Saturday from 10am until 2pm. McGuire is located at 1201 Brant Street between 8th and 9th in SoMa.
We prefer design that's both innovative and accessible, but we've seen plenty of pieces that are borderline intimidating, either in price or sheer perplexity (should I sit on this or put it up on the wall?). But terrifying, that's new to us. Fast Company put together a list of the 12 creepiest furniture designs recently released by several up-and-coming designers. If you want to freak out your kids or disgust your guests, one of these pieces just might be what you're looking for. Check out the entire list here.
Ah, tax season. No good for us freelancers out there, but jackpot for those who've been diligently giving it to the man over the course of the year. Had we a big refund check to blow through (sigh!), our first stop would be Bae. You can feel savvy while at the same time giving yourself a much-deserved treat, because right now all furniture in the store is 40% off. And if you've ever been to Bae, you know this is no ordinary deal - the owner's taste is tops, and since all their furniture is on sale, it means you don't have to pick through the old floor models or something that's been sitting in the stockroom for two years.
Lotus Bleu will be having a sale throughout the month of February so that they can make room for the new additions to their collection. The new pieces aren't really new at all, rather, they're reinvented. For instance, In the photo to the left there's a slipper chair in the bottom left-hand corner. Although it was designed in the 1950's or 60's, it's been updated with a beautiful and bright silk-screened linen pattern of colorful flowers and leaves, which give it it more of a modern appeal. Embrace this great weather and bring some of the outside in, al la vintage prettiness and floral linens. Sale runs through February. Select items between 20-40% off.
Things are abuzz at the courtyard of Limn, where for the next month they'll be unveiling sales upon sales in their "30 Days of Discounts" event going on now. Expect to see items for designers such as ArmaniCasa, B&B Italia, Tom Dixon, Zanotta, and many more. Products available include furniture, rugs, lighting, and accessories... really it's quite a selection. Limn's San Francisco showroom is located at 290 Townsend Street right by the Caltrain station, so make sure to stop by!
