Weekend Getaway to Half Moon Bay

Point Montara Lighthouse

The pumpkins may be long gone, but don’t hold that against Half Moon Bay. Just a little more than half an hour south of San Francisco, this not too big, not too small coastal town has all the makings of a great winter getaway.

Seven Awesome Bay Area Pumpkin Patches

C'mon, get a pumpkin. Here's where to do it nearby.

1. Arata's Pumpkin Farm 185 Verde Dr., Half Moon Bay, (650) 726-7548

If you've ever ridden past the Arata's sprawling field in Half Moon Bay, you've probably wondered what the heck you were looking at. Believe it, that's a  giant iron gorilla and a massive hay maze. Get out and experience their haunted barn and two-acre Minotaur's Labyrinth.

Half Moon Bay: The Disneyland of Pumpkins

Trading its usual seaside chill for a brilliant month full of shades of orange, Half Moon Bay morphs into the Pumpkin Capital each and every October, and it all culminates with this very weekend: the annual Art & Pumpkin Festival.

Now's the Time for Half Moon Bay

With the summer fog blown off, and the fall and winter holidays looming, Half Moon Bay makes the perfect, effortless weekend getaway this time of year. Because it's a mere 30 miles away down relatively uncongested 280, you won't have to leave work early on a Friday to be in HMB by dinnertime. Make a rezzie at Pasta Moon, a warm, Tuscan-inspired eatery on Main Street where the owner circulates among the tables to make sure everyone's happy. Order the lightly battered asparagus, the pear-and-prosciutto wood-fired pizza and, for entrees, the pesto risotto with day boat scallops or the grilled Arctic char in a rosemary demi-glaze. This, my friends, is the way to end a work week.
