Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink For Cheap (or Free) This Week

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF.

1. 21st Amendment's Repeal Day Bash: For a bar named after the amendment that repealed Prohibition, celebrating said repeal is a no-brainer. Join in the fun with a cask of period-priced IPA, available for just a nickel a pint. The catch? You have to have a password to enter their "speakeasy"-- follow their Twitter feed for clues on the catchphrase, starting a few days before the event. Prohibition-era cocktails will also be for sale, and they'll have a poker game for charity; wear your best '20s and '30s attire. (Monday, December 5, parade at 4 pm, drinks at 5 pm, at 21st Amendment, 563 2nd St., SOMA.)

1. 25% Off at Twenty-Five Lusk: Considering that it draws more celebrity sightings than practically any other restaurant in the city, it's not a surprise that Twenty-Five Lusk isn't really into the whole discounting thing. But they're getting into the spirit on Black Friday, offering a 25% markdown on their entire bar menu-- both food and cocktails. It's still not cheap ($5.25 for a soft pretzel, $8.25 for a grapefruit gimlet), but if Clive Owen and Gerard Butler can swing it, you probably can too. (Friday, November 23, 5-7 pm, at Twenty-Five Lusk, 25 Lusk St., SOMA.)

1. Herb Caen Martini Competition: In honor of the famed Chronicle writer and gadabout, Bottle Cap (the new restaurant in the historic Washington Square Bar & Grill space, Caen's old stomping ground) is hosting a martini competition with Chopin vodka. Four North Beach bartenders, representing Park Tavern, Tony Nik's, Campanula, and Bottle Cap itself, will compete to serve the top martini, with the public serving as the judge. Admission to the martini madness is only $5 ($10 at the door), including small bites, and all proceeds benefit Project Open Hand. Be sure to wear your coolest old-school togs for extra style points. Tickets are available here. (Tuesday, November 22, 5:30-7 pm, at Bottle Cap, 1707 Powell St., North Beach.)

1. Kopstootje Night at Jasper's: Next Monday is the perfect time to head to Jasper's for a headbutt-- and no, we promise we're not sending you to some kind of foodie Fight Club. A Dutch kopstootje (that would be "little headbutt"), known in our parts as "a shot and a beer," consists of a shot of genever (they'll be offering Bols), drunk from a tulip glass while bent at the waist and chased with a cold glass of pilsner (this time around, Trumer). Total cost for this grown-up Happy Meal? $2. We knew you'd come around. (Monday, November 14, 9 pm-12 am, at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, 401 Taylor St., Union Square.)

1. Drink Me Grand Tasting: The Drink Me magazine version of a Mad Hatter's tea party features a lot less tea, a lot more booze, and approximately the same amount of funny hats. For just $20 ($30 at the door), attendees will get a full-sized cocktail and tastings of a wide range of libations, from Knob Creek and Laphroaig to Ninkasi and Blue Moon brews to wines from 53B and Michael David. A DJ will spin, and food will be available for purchase; all you have to do is remember to wear your craziest chapeau. Tickets are available here. (Friday, November 4, 5:30-9:30 pm, at 111 Minna Gallery, 111 Minna St., SOMA.)

1. Flavorpill SF Happy Hour: Amstel Light is teaming up with Flavorpill SF to offer an evening of gratis suds and dancing with DJ Ron Elder at the Elbo Room. The event will also benefit Root Division, which subsidizes artists' studios in exchange for teaching art to children and adults. RSVP here to get in, and be sure to get there early; they've made it very clear that an RSVP doesn't necessarily guarantee admission, and to paraphrase the ads, free beer can be a pretty Dam big draw. (Thursday, October 27, 6-8 pm, at Elbo Room, 647 Valencia St., Mission.)

1. SF Zombie Crawl: With Halloween around the corner and Sunday's Walking Dead premiere drawing blockbuster ratings, it's no surprise that SF's got zombies on the braaaaaains. Throw on your best gross makeup and shredded clothes and stalk the streets on this pub crawl, which is loaded with drink specials for those in appropriate attire. The party starts at R Bar with $2 Olympia, $5 Svedka, and $8 beer/shot combos, then staggers to Kimo's for $3 Sailor Jerry shots and "Zombie Punch." Shanghai Kelly's will follow with $3 16-ounce Millers and $2 zombie grog, while the final stop, Cafe Royale, will dish out $5 cocktails. More info here. (Saturday, October 22, 7 pm, at Civic Center courtyard.)

1. N-Judah Chronicles Anniversary Bash: The N-Judah Chronicles are celebrating six years of keeping tabs on life in the Inner Sunset, and neighborhood folks are invited to come celebrate with them at Blackthorn Tavern, where Blockboard will be giving away free beers. The catch? You either have to prove that you live in the I.S. (they threaten obscure trivia questions), or download the Blockboard app on your phone. Not a bad deal, all told. RSVP here. Thursday, October 13, 5-7 pm, at Blackthorn Tavern, 834 Irving St., Inner Sunset.
