Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink For Cheap (or Free) This Week

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF.

1. Ana Mandara's Anniversary: Ana Mandara, the Vietnamese fusion restaurant tucked away in Ghirardelli Square, isn't known to many non-tourists in this town. The impressively huge and done-up space will provide a great backdrop to its tenth-anniversary celebration: purchase one of a number of $10 entrees, including lobster ravioli, Vietnamese dumplings, and barbeque shrimp with garlic noodles, and they'll throw in a free beer, glass of wine, or house specialty cocktail. Don't let the tourists have all the fun. (Daily through April 30th, 5:30-10 pm, at Ana Mandara, 891 Beach St., North Beach.)

1. Brown Bag Exhibition: The clothing-boutique-cum-gallery D-Structure is a reliable source of friendly Friday nights floated on free/cheap beer, cocktails, and wine. Their newest art show, Brown Bag Exhibition, is dedicated to starving artists, and features work done on or with cheapo materials. The presence of the booze isn't confirmed, but even if it's not there, you can't expect to name your gallery exhibition "Brown Bag" and not see a few Tecate tallboys wander over from the corner store, right? (Friday, April 2, 8 pm, at D-Structure, 520 Haight St., Lower Haight.)

1. March Madness at Royal Exchange: Even though most of the games won't be showing in the hours they're offering this deal, Royal Exchange is aiming to get FiDi denizens in the mood for the final weeks of March Madness. They're offering $3 Bud, Bud Light, and Shock Top hefeweizen all day, as well as $5 buffalo wings and nachos to help soak it up. It should provide some balm to those whose busted brackets mean they won't be seeing the $20 for the office pool anytime soon. (Monday-Friday through April 5th, 11 am-11 pm, at Royal Exchange, 301 Sacramento St., Financial District.)

1. Harlem at the Ambassador: Though the name may bring to mind New York's struggling neighborhood, this Harlem is actually a Dutch drink that resembles Jagermeister. The brand managers have been handing out samples guerrilla-style to folks around town (just a few weeks ago, we were unexpected recipients in a neighborhood bar), but they're making a scheduled stop to give away free shots and Harlem-Red Bull mixers at the Ambassador this Friday. After 11, you can get the Harlem Red Bulls for $5-- a great drink or alternate-universe sports-team name. (Friday, March 19, free drinks 9-11 pm, at The Ambassador, 673 Geary St., Tenderloin.)

1. ThirstyBear Beer Education: The local beer purveyor, which is certified organic and brews sustainably, wants you to sample its wares-- on your lunch break. If you can undergo the office subterfuge necessary to sipping, you'll be rewarded with educational talks on sustainable brewing, plenty of free beer samples, and a great impetus to spend the rest of the day slacking off on the Internet. (Thursday, March 11, 12-1:30 pm, at Green Zebra Environmental Center, 50 Post St., Tenderloin.)

1. Half-Off at Bar 888 Tonight: Social networking is apparently so popular at Bar 888 that they slash their prices at the mere mention of it. Name-drop Twitter or Facebook and get 50% off your entire bar bill: drinks, bites, the works. It's like a big, Silicon Valley-shaped hug. (Tonight, Thursday, February 25, 11 am-12 am, at Bar 888, Intercontinental Hotel, 888 Howard St., SOMA.)
