Mondays are a great day to have off; when the house is quiet and everyone else is off at work, I can take some time to do some cooking for the week. I use whatever market goodies have made their way home with me to cook up some basics—like a pot of beans, a pan of roasted root veggies and good homemade stock—that can easily be turned into several week night meals or a brown bag lunch or two. Having great staples in the pantry always makes everything a little more tasty and most of my favorite pantry items come from the farmers market. Here are the essentials I recommend to make your weekly routine a little more delicious:

Winter greens, packed with good-for-you vitamins, are at their prime right now. Braised, sautéed or wilted in soups they add great texture and flavor to many recipes. With all the the rain and gloomy weather this week I started dreaming about things that are best cooked slowly and eaten out of bowls. At the market I gravitated towards the beautiful greens currently available and found some of my personal favorites.

It’s a new year and many of our market sellers have exciting new products in the works. Over the next few months we’ll see the unveiling of everything from whole-wheat cake mix, to walnut oil to small-batch preserves. Needless to say, there will be lots to taste and enjoy in 2010. This week I was particularly excited to hear about these new cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery.

It’s hard to believe the Thursday market has been open for less than a year. The local and national press, as well as food bloggers far and near have declared it a hit! This market was a personal labor of love for me and I’m thrilled to see what it offers each week—from unique lunch specials to the ever-changing bounty of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Despite the scattered rain and bitter cold, the December market is bustling. It’s that time of year when Cypress Flower Farms’ Saturday stand is brimming with wreathes and holiday swag made from Eucalyptus, heather, fir, cypress, and redwood branches and leaves. They smell fantastic and they’re so bright and beautiful they’ll inspire even the biggest holiday scrooge to brighten their homes with a touch of the natural world.
