Heath Ceramics just breathed new life into an old linen supply and laundry facility and added itself to the Mission's ever-growing roster of locally grown talent. The new retail space on 18th and Florida is so much more than a boutique, with an in-store chef's kitchen that will house local food items and serve as a gathering spot for events, a dedicated gallery that will host rotating shows throughout the year, a factory viewing court, and a Blue Bottle Coffee cafe (the latter two opening soon).
What if we told you that works by such famous artists as Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, and Chuck Close were currently on view in the dark basement of a new Mission gallery? Last night, I came up with the perfect idea for Halloween and since I'm not into dressing up myself, you can have my ultimate mixologist costume. All it entails is a mustache, suspenders, a page boy cap, a shaker, and an ice pick for making perfect ice. Obscure bitters would be good. For a little gore, add some fake blood to the tip of the ice pick which you can say is from the customer you stabbed when they asked for a vodka tonic.
I caught up with visual designer Shawn Carrico, while standing in line at the SF Street Food Festival, last Saturday in the Mission. His red bow-tie and wicked-sharp glasses immediately caught my attention but, while he's incorporated great details, his outfit is still refreshingly casual -- and thus, street food appropriate. Shawn said his favorite eats at the festival were the Penang Curry Bomb Bun and Sharbat from Azalina's.
