When Kachusha Munkanta was 9-years-old, the cycling pro tour came through his hometown of Philadelphia. Inspired by the energy of the tour and the bright team colors, Munkanta and his brother peddled to the nearest bike shop to buy their favorite fluorescent team hat.
Today, more than 20 years later, Munkanta—-who is affectionately known as Chuey-—sits in front of his Mission District workshop wearing a wool cycling hat of his own creation. As the owner of Chuey Brand, a locally made and internationally known small-scale cycling clothing company, this grown up Philly kid is moving San Francisco bike fashion to the front of the pack. “I happened to start at the right time,” says Munkanta, as he spins a small bike lock in his hand. “There’s this whole urban bike movement that’s happening.”

Easy bike routes to practice your skills:
The world-famous Wiggle is a gradually-climbing route that zig zags through the city and has long been used (on foot and on horseback) as an easy way to navigate San Francisco. It starts at the Ferry Building and takes you through major neighborhoods like downtown, the Castro, Panhandle, the Haight and Golden Gate Park. Use Market Street's new green bike lanes until you hit the Castro and Lower Haight. You'll be on Fell Street, a high speed, one-way road, for only one block before you hit the Panhandle, which will take you to Golden Gate Park. Once you're in the park, relax and enjoy the scenery.
Mojo Bicycle Cafe, the Divisadero bike shop and cafe known for awesome coffee (they serve De La Paz and Ritual) and great outdoor seating (they were a Best of the Day 2010 pick), has been venturing into the dinner arena for the past few weeks now with a Monday Night Supper Club, featuring local chefs cooking up prix fixe dinners on their nights off. Tonight, the Supper Club continues with guests chefs James Lalonde and Joe McColgan, vets of Pizzeria Delfina, Town Hall, Fish & Farm and Bacar kitchens.
