Stern Grove

One of Our Own Ties the Knot in a Vintage Woodsy Wedding

California Home + Design's Online Editor, Owen Ray, wed his lovely wife, Caitlin, at Stern Grove Trocadero Clubhouse in San Francisco. Pardon our bias as CHD's sister company (aka Owen's co-workers), but we can't help getting lost in these wedding photos and falling back in time for a moment.

August Classical Music Roundup

Turtle Island String Quartet at Yoshi’s

Called the future of classical music, Turtle Island String Quartet lends a fresh slant to the standard chamber sound. Melding the bright virtuosity of classical with contemporary music styles, Turtle Island Quartet has won two Grammys for Best Classical Crossover Album. They've also been endorsed by Yo-Yo Ma, who calls it “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground - a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.”

August 7. Yoshi’s, 1330 Fillmore Street. Tickets are $28 at 415-655-5600.

San Francisco Opera at Stern Grove

The San Francisco Ballet Performs at Stern Grove This Weekend

Aside from crashing the War Memorial Opera House (you probably shouldn’t do that), heading to Stern Grove is one of the best ways to see the world-renowned San Francisco Ballet for free. Slapping down your credit card at the box office of the Opera de Paris-Palais Garnier or Sadler's Wells Theatre in London is also fun, but  such venues are a little more finicky about allowing audience members to tote in cold cuts and bottles of wine. So if you want to absorb culture (and salami) under towering trees, head to Stern Grove this Sunday.

Look of the Week: Picnic in the Park, SF Symphony at the 74th Annual Stern Grove Festival

There's no doubt the masses will flock to every park in the city this weekend for some get-it-while-you-can, quality sun basking. The usual suspects are, of course, the uber-hip fest at Dolores Park, BBQs at Crissy Field, or bike riding at Golden Gate. While those parks are always a-happenin', this Sunday, make the trek out to Stern Grove for the SF Symphony's free concert at the 74th Annual Stern Grove Festival.

Mission Music Collective Jazz Mafia Premiering New Piece at Stern Grove This Weekend

If a philharmonic orchestra married a big band and kept its street rap mistress in the attic, you’d have something approaching the Jazz Mafia sound. And one hell of a dysfunctional family dynamic. Playing Stern Grove this weekend, Jazz Mafia's electric blend of funk, soul, and brass will continue to defy genre with all its funky brass heart.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings Open the 2011 Stern Grove Free Concert Season

For those who couldn't make it to Stern Grove yesterday, here's a photo recap of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings' stellar performance. 80 degree temps + free world class music = a great day.

Free This Weekend: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at Stern Grove

Sharon Jones began her music career in a choir in Augusta, Georgia. Then she stopped, after a record executive told her she’d never make it. Twenty years later, she was lifted from the back of a chorus to lead a nine-piece Motown revivalist group.

Since then, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have lent their haunting sound to two Grammy-winning albums (Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black and legendary soul singer Al Green’s Lay It Down) and soundtracks for films featuring little-known actors like Denzel Washington and George Clooney. Their fourth album, I Learned the Hard Way, landed them on NPR, BBC, and late night shows. Now they’re at Stern Grove, where you can hear them for the price of sitting in the fog.

Ballerinas in the Mist: SF Ballet at Stern Grove

This post is for the subset of the San Francisco population inhabiting the Venn diagram interception between People Who Enjoy Classical Dance and People Fond of the Free. With the related but not strictly necessary parallel with People Fond of Drinking Booze at the Ballet.
