Gravel Bikes are Cycling's Hottest Trend, Here's Where to Take Yours This Weekend

New trend alert: gravel bikes bear a resemblance to endurance road bikes, but are outfitted for use on gravel, dirt, or fire roads. No doubt you'll be seeing these babies around town, so here's where to take yours when you finally give in to the peer pressure.

Hawk Hill Challenge - The Bay Area's Most Scenic Road Ride

The view of the City southeast from high atop Hawk Hill in the Headland

A visit to one of the Bay Area’s most scenic vistas is not soon forgotten – getting to it on a bike for the first time is even more memorable. Today we’ll tackle a top tourist attraction that is also a challenge for cyclists of all abilities. A ride up to Hawk Hill is a great bucket list climb – one that elite San Francisco cyclists often incorporate into their weekly training regimes.

A fast start had me jamming to keep up with the peloton.

For those who want to know more about the joys of road cycling on the Peninsula, look no further than the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club. One of the larger cycling clubs in the Bay Area (established in 1983), they offer an extensive calendar of weekly rides, with as many as five a day.

Top 5 Road Bike Climbs in SF and the Peninsula

The best bike climbs offer a range of qualities that driven cyclists crave when out for a good pedal mashing— altitude, attitude, fortitude, and solitude. Here are the top five road bike climbs in San Francisco and the peninsula from north to south.

The Ultimate Sunday Bike Ride: Angel Island

Map of Angel Island State Park

A day spent on Angel Island is a day well spent. This one of the most historically interesting parks in the State of California, as well as offering (arguably) some of the best views available in any metropolitan area anywhere in the world.

The Ultimate Sunday Bike Ride: China Camp State Park

The view Northeast from the Shoreline Trail in China Camp.

Today’s ride takes us off the pavement and onto the dirt to China Camp State Park in Marin County, located along the Southwestern edge of San Pablo Bay. The park and its extensive trail system offer sweeping views to the North across the water to nearby Mt. Burdell and the shores of Sonoma County and on a clear day, Mt. Saint Helena can be seen rising high above Napa. We’ll ride one of the sweetest four miles of single track the North Bay has to offer: The Shoreline Trail.
