Look of the Week: SF Ballet Presents Giselle

The window displays around Union Square are all a flutter with fancy tutus and pretty pink pointe shoes, circling buzz for the SF Ballet's 2011 Season, opening with Giselle this Saturday evening.

The ballet is a classic place to see and be seen in SF. With that in mind, we're channeling our inner Gisele, and thinking long, lean and elegant.

Get a Better Profile Pic: Free Estee Lauder Makeup + Photo Session

How many times have you cringed at your [choose one of the following: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blog, Stumble Upon, Yelp, Going.com, MySpace, Match.com, all of the above] profile picture and wished that a fairy makeup godmother would descend from the heavens, paint your face perfectly and then snap a profile photo that finally does your countenance justice?

If the answer to that question is far, far too many times, then you’re not alone. To remedy the situation, you could, of course, shell out the big bucks for private makeup application and session with a professional photographer.

What's the Deal: Post-Holiday Sales

Christmas cash burning a hole in your handbag? Post-holiday sales are in full swing. A few on our radar this week:

New in Union Square: Johnny Bueno Color Studio

For hair cut, color and styling services that come with Bay views, a garden setting and the freedom to choose the music tinkling or blaring (your choice, natch) from the speakers during your time in the chair, look no further than Union Square’s newly-opened Johnny Bueno Color Studio.

“I basically look at my studio as a great place to do hair, but it’s also an art piece,” says Bueno, a master colorist whose resume includes four years at San Francisco’s Atelier Emmanuel and training at London’s Aveda Academy and Toni&Guy in France.

Do Good on Friday, and Macy’s Street Teams May Give You $25

Bestow random acts of kindness, and you may be rewarded in unexpected ways. No, we’re not recalling a message from our last fortune cookie, but the latest holiday promotion from Macy’s.

On Friday, Dec. 11, two street teams (dubbed the Macy’s Believe Newsboys) will be roving through downtown San Francisco looking for people doing good acts in their daily lives. When they spot a deserving individual, street teams will reward them for their positive deeds and acts of kindness with $25 Macy’s Believe Bonus cards, good toward future purchases at the department store.

The promotion is part of Macy’s National Believe Day, which encourages the spirit of the season through various charitable initiatives.

Bugging Out

In full odd and awkward fashion grown humans dressed as insects descended on Union Square to celebrate Cirque Du Soleil's OVO. Swarms of wing-ed clad performers proved the best remedy to warm the antennae is to dance. Area shoppers put away their lists for brief spurts of bugging out.

50 Cent on Being Sexy and Sweat-Proof Stage Style

With his long-awaited new album Before I Self Destruct released online this week, it was no surprise to find hundreds of fans pouring onto the Macy’s Union Square cosmetics floor yesterday evening for a chance to meet Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, in town for the launch of his new men’s fragrance, Power by fifty cent, sold exclusively through the department store.

Parc 55's Voyeuristic Union Square Publicity Stunt

As part of their re-opening promotion taking place June 16-18, Parc 55 Hotel is giving the world a glimpse inside one of their newly renovated 'View' rooms by placing a see-through hotel room in middle of Union Square, the clincher being the fact that it’s complete with a live woman, apparently fresh from the shower (wearing a robe, towel wrapped around her head, and randomly, a pair of sunglasses) lounging on the bed with a magazine—shopping bags littering the floor with her day’s loot.

Hopefully, no drunk Union Square tourists will taunt her, lest they end up like those poor kids in the zoo. Those ladies who lunch can sure be tigers.

Unexpectedly Charmed by Tiffany & Co. Key Collection

Iconic charms often strike us as a little too charming for their own good. So you can imagine our surprise when we stopped by Tiffany & Co. earlier this month to view the new Tiffany Keys Collection and (gasp!) actually got a sparkle in our eye to rival the diamonds dotting the silver, gold and platinum beauties all around us.
