Truckee Tahoe Radio Defies the Man Up North

Listening to the wireless these days can be pretty aggravating – when you tune in to most non-talk/sports commercial radio stations what you get is mostly corporate, computer play-listed pap. And generally, the music is even worse.

That's the reason why such things as Pandora, Spotify, Grooveshark and Truckee Tahoe Radio exist.

Tahoe Truckee Radio, 101.5 on your FM dial or truckeetahoeradio.com on your desktop, laptop, notepad or smartphone, is almost a throwback to the heyday of freeform radio, when the DJ played pretty much what he or she felt like according to his or her mood at the time. Old school. New school. Maybe even preschool. You name it, and Truckee Tahoe Radio will probably play it.

According to 101.5's mission statement, "Our format is Triple A, which means we play a wide variety of music. You'll hear everything from Led Zeppelin to the Kings of Leon, The Cure to B.B. King. We don't have to worry about 'the man' breathing down our neck, telling us what to play. We play whatever we want."

Along with the music, 101.5 listeners get regular updates on snow and ski resort conditions in the winter and outdoor recreation options in the summer. The station also passes along items of interest to the local community.

And the piece de resistance: On Sunday, April 1, Truckee Tahoe Radio will be giving away an Alaska Rendezvous Heli-Guides trip for two. Details on how to enter the drawing are available here.
