High Hopes for SFMOMA

(blog)

A bit of hard work and dedication never hurt anyone. Our beloved SFMOMA has already amassed $250 million out of their $480 million campaign goal. Money will be used for renovations, include tripling of the public space, expanded educational programs, enhancement of exhibitions and other services for the public. Particularly the anticipated Fisher Collection, a prized accumulation of private modern and contemporary art, will be sure to up the SFMOMA's street cred.

Luc Tuymans: The Artist Questions Art

(blog)
Secretary of State, Gaskamer, Ignatius Von Loyolla

Luc Tuymans may not be a household name but don’t mistake that as reason to bypass this very important exhibit. The Belgian artist’s first US retrospective is the most comprehensive presentation of his work to date, featuring nearly 75 key paintings from 1978 to the present. Considered by many as one of the most significant painters today, Tuymans’ has already made a lasting impression on today’s generation of artists.

Blending film techniques with a mastery of painting, Belgian artist Luc Tuymans explores themes of history, memory and mass media. The exhibit showcases a comprehensive array of his work to date, with about 75 key paintings from 1985 to the present. The artist is influenced greatly by Northern European painting tradition, as well as photography, television and cinema.

SFMOMA really knows how to throw a party. To coincide with their 75th anniversary celebration, they enlisted the help of nine artists with Bay Area ties and local clothing giant Gap to create a line of unique limited-edition T-shirts. The result is a brilliant collection of eight unisex shirts from the likes of well-known artists Chris Johanson, Barry McGee, Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel that are sure to be highly covetable for art students and collectors alike.

As much as we love getting dressed to the nines to peruse the seemingly endless art galleries on First Thursday, the fabulous SFMOMA openings have remained elusive...until now. In honor of their 75th anniversary, SFMOMA is opening the floodgates to members and non-members (sadly, we fall into this category) alike to ogle what's sure to be one of the best collections we've ever seen, gratis.

75 and fabulous. In honor of its 75th anniversary on January 18, the SFMOMA presents a free weekend celebration from January 16 to 18. Programming includes an encore presentation of Bill Fontana's Sound Sculptures Through the Golden Gate originally shown at SFMOMA in 1987 for the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, family film screenings and hands-on art projects, a presentation about SFMOMA's outreach program to conserve art in the community, craft workshops designed by Allison Smith, multimedia tours of collections and more.

Mechanical Mad Science

(event)
Free

Philly-based artist and mad mechanical scientist Max Lawrence is setting up shop at SFMOMA's museum garage windows between Minna Street and Natoma Alley. Lawrence (aka Electric Conductor) will be presenting a self-sustaining light orchestra, which will hold nightly concerts. Comprised of rewired toys and homemade synthesizers, the "band" doubles as a mural by day before it comes alive at night. See for yourself at the opening reception on January 9 from 5 - 8 p.m., where you'll also hear music by Baths, Double Brainbow and the said animatronic band Kimber Lite and the Pipes.

On January 18, SFMOMA marks its 75th year as a pioneer in contemporary work. The modern art museum has been breaking new ground since 1935, always pushing the envelope and challengeing conventions. From mounting Jackson Pollock's first solo museum exhibition in 1945 to standing behing the emerging Mission School scene in the mid-1990s, SFMOMA has never failed to stand out.
