If the idea of karaoke really gets you going, take it up a notch and consider Hotel Utah's open mic night every Monday. Whether you're aiming for a spot up onstage or just want to hear new music by someone you've never heard of, start your week with a mellow night of music. Just around 10 after all the open mic hooplah has come to and end, the evening's feature artist (i.e. open mic veteran) will jam for a half hour. Tonight: Andoni Bundros.

Luke Rathbone.

A young man on the rise - that’s Luke Rathbone. The 21-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y., songwriter will soon be joining his chum Devendra Banhart on the road (he fielded a sweet array of props from guest editor Banhart in a recent edition of Magnet) and is looking forward to the release of his debut, Hello Dark Prince.

Bhi Bhiman

Bhi Bhiman strummed out a perfectly executed set to a packed crowd at the quaint Hotel Utah. His set included a couple previews from his forthcoming album, quite a few from The Cookbook, and our favorite, a track about how “God is a Warriors fan and Satan loves the Lakers.” There's some hometown pride for you.

Bhi Bhiman

Bhi Bhiman has a one-of-a-kind name. No, literally. He’s the only person on the planet with this name. But that’s not too terribly unique in a family where all the men are named in similar fashion. For example, his brother’s name is Arj Arjunan, dad is Ramesh Ramesvara, etc.

A well-worn venue with a long old-fashioned wood bar and a separate room for music, the Hotel Utah has its share of unexpected solo performances from leaders of larger bands.
