Siren Call

By day a stretch of chic boutiques, by night a singles scene, the Marina’s Main Street never stays the same for long.

Neighborhood turnover is a given in SF, but only the hottest of the hot spots survive for long on the prime real estate that is Chestnut Street. Alongside such anchors as iconic coffee shop the Grove and the historic Presidio Theater, the crowds are still squeezing into two-year-old Mamacita and three-year old A16, while all around them new shops and eateries pop up like a game of Whac-a-Mole.

Top Chef Hearts SF

(blog)
Just one contender, chef Ryan Scott of Myth Cafe is on his way to the top.
A while ago, a producer from Bravo called me to ask if 7x7 wanted to cover this new reality show on chefs because they were shooting the first season in SF. I asked for details, but they wouldn't reveal more—so I passed. My mistake.

Restaurants from Chestnut Street to Hawthorne Lane are reinventing themselves.

Restaurants from Chestnut Street to Hawthorne Lane are reinventing themselves.Restaurants have been going the way of Nip/Tuck—opting for extreme makeovers. First Cozmo’s, the Chestnut Street singles-scene mecca, reinvented itself as the swanky Circa, then last fall, restaurateur Jocelyn Bulow turned his struggling La Suite restaurant into the French-Asian bistro Sutra. Most recently, upscale Hawthorne Lane evolved from business-dinner formal to a hip, retro-chic restaurant called Two.

It’s amazing what some crystal-dripping chandeliers can do: Cozmo’s, in the Marina, once best known for its singles scene, was reinvented in 2006 as Circa with the help of a revamped gold-and-sage interior by Michael Brennan. He opened up the space to make the central, square-shaped bar and plush dining room more inclusive, adding round booths and a raised communal table.

Eats:What's on your menu.:
The food takes itself more seriously now too. Chef Erik Hopfinger’s appetizers are twists on all-American: “Tater tots” are given a filling of Dungeness crab, foie gras is seared and served with peanut-butter brioche and huckleberry jam for the ultimate PB&J, and mac-and-cheese gets lobster and truffles. Entrées have international flavor, such as rosy Moroccan-spiced lamb “lollichops.” Instead of dessert, you may want to feast on the eye candy at the bar—proof that the meet-and-greet scene is still alive and well.
