A Fall Feast

(event)

On November 15, Piccino embraces autumn with a day devoted to chestnuts, quail and mushrooms. They’ll be grilling the birds, adding the mushrooms to myriad dishes and roasting the chestnuts over an open fire. Naturally, pizza and salads will also be on offer—stop by anytime from noon until 5 p.m. for a taste of the season.

Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee Rules!

I know this "Buzzed" column is typically about alcoholic beverages, but I'm writing today about a different kind of buzz--the one we get from really good coffee. I had to speak out on this after reading this absurd post on the Atlantic Monthly website. He lurches off to talk about acidity and flavor in both coffee and wine, a subject I don't think he has much of a grasp on. Acidity doesn't have flavor per se, it more affects the perception of balance and brightness.

The Piccino crew will be cooking up a special dinner on Sunday, July 21 with Michael and Jacky Recchiuti (of Recchiuti Chocolate) in celebration of Michael’s 49th birthday. The multi-course meal will include antipasti, gnocchi with tomato sauce, a whole fish with an herb rub, a cheese course and, for dessert, Michael’s ice cream sandwiches. Dinner is $85 and is almost sold out—call Wayne at 415-350-5157 to book your spot, or email wayne@garciayrogat.com.

They’re calling in a Mariquita Marathon—on Sunday, June 21, Mariquita farmers Andy Griffin and Julia Wiley will be contributing a giant vegetable bounty of the Piccino kitchen. The cooks will then prepare an a la carte feast—pizzas, salads and other delicious surprises. Stop in between noon and 9 p.m. to sample some fresh from the farm fare.

If by Sunday, August 30, you haven’t reached your bacon saturation point, you can head on over to Piccino from their ferragosto party, an homage to the Italian summer tradition of knocking off work for the month of August. How civilized! They will be roasting a whole pig in la caja china and grilling corn and peppers alongside…and did we mention the free-flowing rosé? You want to get in on this.

Follow up your day at the Chocolate Salon with a special dinner at Piccino with chocolate-maker (and Piccino neighbor) Michael Recchiuti. The menu promises to feature chocolate elements throughout (not just for dessert), plus the opportunity to hobnob with the man behind the burnt caramel pavé. Call Piccino to book your table.

Rained out last month, Piccino is opening its sidewalk again for Hog Island Oyster day. Hog Island's team of super shuckers will be plating the slippery suckers both raw and grilled while the cafe fires up thin crusted pizzas, tosses seasonal greens, and pours a selection of complimentary wines and local microbrews.
