Skip out of the office for an extended lunch break. Alembic is giving away free pulled pork sliders for one day only to usher in its new daily lunch offerings. Don't get carried away—there's a limit of two per person. Plan to quaff a brew as you take advantage of this deal and then stop by Escape to New York for a slice on your way back to the office.

Welcome in the new year by drinking on the cheap. On Monday nights, you can get half-priced bottled beers at Alembic. Choose from a wide variety of local and import brews and toast to good times.

What's more—starting today, Alembic will now be serving lunch daily from noon - 5 p.m.. Think pulled-pork sliders, beer-battered rock cod, trumpet mushroom banh mi and more.

Big Ice at Heaven's Dog

Even though we San Franciscans are chilly most of the year, during these rare scorching days of summer, it's hard not to occasionally fantasize about a cold beverage, filled to the top with glistening, frosty ice cubes. We don't usually spend a lot of time thinking about ice, but I can assure you that many of city's bartenders do whether it's cubed, spheroid, chipped, shaved or crushed.

The Best Absinthe Cocktails in Town

(blog)

It was great to see last week's absinthe column by the New York Times' Eric Asimov. It was also great to be mentioned in his corresponding blog post. Just before the column ran, he came into town for a couple of nights, and on one of them I took him round to a couple of bars and later for dinner at RN74.

With my rapidly advancing age, marital state and experience working at Cantina on many Fridays over the last year, I have largely stopped going out on weekend nights. Bars are just too crowded, too loud. You know . . . too "too." And I don't even have kids.

But I had friend in town from LA this weekend who was interested in the SF cocktail scene, so Friday was a good chance to observe the weekend nightlife at a couple of the city's more happening cocktail outposts.

You know we wouldn’t be recommending a wine dinner at cocktailers paradise, the Alembic, unless it was a worthy one. And this one is: Join Sutton Cellars winemaker Carl Sutton for an early Sunday Supper. The kitchen will be roasting a whole pig for the occasion, the grape juice will be flowing freely and, let’s face it, we all need a break from the holiday grind.

Note: Can’t make it on Sunday? The Alembic has also started happy hour—half-priced snacks from 5 - 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Warm Yourself up at the Alembic

A warm-up spot in the Haight.

A warm-up spot in the Haight.

When the winter chill rolls into Golden Gate Park, head to the Alembic, from the owners of the nearby Magnolia Pub & Brewery, for a little warmth. The bar was made from bleachers from the original Kezar Stadium (with seat numbers still visible), and the walls and floor were constructed from recycled materials (a 160-year-old Wisconsin barn and a 100-year-old Pennsylvania barn, respectively). The menu of small plates exudes homeyness too, with such “nibbles” as a crunchy risotto cake with shredded duck, and fried goat-cheese fritters.

Thomas Waugh's Last Night at Alembic

(blog)
I went into the Alembic last weekend to catch bartender Thomas Waugh on his last night. The ambitious young Waugh is heading off to the bright lights and no-2 AM-close of New York City, where he's already arranged to work shifts at such famous joints as PDT and Death and Company.

The Alembic

(business)
2008 EAT + DRINK AWARD: Best Cocktails This bar/restaurant (along with its sister restaurant, the nearby Magnolia Pub) has single-handedly transformed the drinking and dining landscape on Haight Street. There's history in the space: the bar was made from bleachers from the original Kezar Stadium, and the walls and floor are made from reclaimed wood. At the bar, masters of the cocktail shake and stir it up, and they have a superb mint julep in their repertoire.

The Bartender Shuffle

(article)

It’s 10 o’clock—do you know where your favorite mixologist is right now?

It’s 10 o’clock—do you know where your favorite mixologist is right now?A bartender isn’t just a bartender anymore. Some actually prefer to be called “bar chefs” (which seems appropriate, considering the increasing mise en place of cocktail ingredients). And just as SF foodies follow their favorite toques, today “boozies” dutifully follow their preferred mixologists. But the chase is complicated. Some top bartenders hold down as many as three gigs.
