More on the Tenderloin Makeover

(blog)
Proposed project by Christopher Simmons and Tim Belonax

Add one more to the list of so-called Tenderloin revitalization projects that have sprung up over the last month in the city’s most flavorful neighborhood. Art in Storefronts, a pilot program initiated by Mayor Gavin Newsom, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC), launches today.

Year after year, despite making a mental note to think of a Halloween costume in advance, it always comes down to frantically throwing together an ensemble in the final week before the big day. But that doesn't mean you can't still come up with something brilliant (and stylish!) without having to fight the last-minute costume shop masses. With that, we leave you with 5 ideas that you can (mostly) piece together from your closet:

Mark Leibovich begins this Sunday's Times magazine feature, "Who Can Possibly Govern California?", by summing up our fair state: "Calamity is just part of the equation here, as if God gave California so much glamour and grandeur and great weather that he had to throw in some apocalyptic menace to provide a little balance. Earthquakes, say. Or Sacramento." Or foggy summers.

At Ease with Charlotte Shultz

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Sec. of State George Shultz

As you already know, Monday was a heady day of power politicos who parachuted into San Francisco.

And the majority of these players (minus First Lady Michelle Obama, though she was, of course, invited) ended that day at an intimate dinner hosted by Protocol Chief Charlotte Mailliard Shultz and her husband, Former Sec. of State George Shultz in their Russian Hill aerie.

We suppose it was inevitable, especially after being featured in this month's Elle. Newsom's perfectly-coiffed hair (which everyone now knows can be credited to L'Oreal Total Control Clean Gel) now has a Twitter account.

Some of our favorite tweets include:

The June issue of Elle magazine just came out with a feature article about “Mayor McHottie,” as SF- and Grotto-based author Diana Kapp calls Gavin Newsom.

Gav's Bachelor Pad Up for Sale

SocketSite

Yup, now you can rest your head where those infamous locks used to lie... for just shy of a cool $3mil. According to SocketSite, Newsom is selling the Bellaire Tower Penthouse condo he purchased in 2006 from Peter Getty, but not without making a few major changes to the place first.

Gavin Newsom's Tech-Savvy Announcement

(blog)
You go, Gavin.

Well, look at our up-with-the-times mayor.  Gavin Newsom made it official this morning via Twitter, YouTube, Facebook (1,309 fans, and counting, "like" this) and the Huffington Post that he's throwing his hat in the ring for governor.  Round of applause for the use of new media.

Al Gore, Gavin Newsom and Robert Redford are all expected tonight at the War Memorial Opera House to congratulate the winners of the 2009 Goldman Environmental Prize (often dubbed the "Nobel Prize" for environmental activistsm and "The Green Oscars").

We were glad to learn we aren’t the only ones who’ve pondered the substance responsible for Mayor Gavin Newsom’s ever-so-neatly coiffed ‘do. The product or products behind the mayoral mane’s enviable hold and impressively uniform shape have intrigued us for years. Finally, today we have the answer. And we have none other than Ryan Seacrest to thank.
