Legion of Honor The Fine Arts Museums presents Cartier and America, a centennial exhibition celebrating the House of Cartier (“king of jewelers and jeweler to kings,”) which feature exquisite pieces of Cartier jewelry and objets from private collections which were created during the era of the Belle Époque through the 1970s. Opens Dec. 19. California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park, 34th Ave. and Clement St., San Francisco. (415) 750-3600.

As cliché as it sounds, Marilyn Monroe really had it right when she sang “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.  I never fancied myself the extravagant type … until I walked through "Cartier and America" at the Legion of Honor. Awestruck and enamored by hall upon hall of sparkling jewels, I found myself dreaming of getting my hands on some of these exquisite pieces, if only to try them on for a few very special seconds. Beyond aspirational, this show features pieces that only a few elite will ever have the privilege of knowing.

The iconic House of Cartier sparkles at the Legion of Honor just in time for the holidays. The exhibition, exclusive to the Legion, marks Cartier's 100 years in the US and concentrates on pieces owned by Americans, including a pair of rock crystal and diamond bracelets worn by Gloria Swanson in the movie Sunset Boulevard. Covering the history of the jewelry house from as early as the '20s and '30s, "Cartier and America" showcases more than 200 objects and highlights the collection's ingenuity in design and exquisite craftsmanship.
