I was having dinner the other night with one of the former cooks from Greens restaurant—Greens from back in the day, right after Deborah Madison left to go to Santa Fe. We were talking about its slightly scandalous, Zen Center, hippie past and what has grown out of it. Brothers

From the street, this barbecue haven resembles others dotting the Richmond: cafeteria-style lighting, linoleum floors, and seemingly non-descript tables lining white walls. But open the door, and the intoxicating smell of barbecue and the groups of energetic diners suggest this place is a cut above average. Diverse groups sit around their table-inset grills, cooking up their own feasts, while the gregarious staff delivers gifts from the kitchen to unsuspecting diners. Eats:What's on your menu.: Order any of the tempting grillables— shrimp, chicken, tripe or our favorite, the marinated beef called bul goh—and a cascade of panchan is immediately delivered to your table. Packed with contrasting tastes and textures, these adventurous small dishes, ranging from fiery kim chi to mellow pickled cucumbers, are the ideal compliment to Brother’s savory ‘cue. With its unmatched smoky flavor, and salty-sweet, slightly piquant marinade the barbeque is the star, but soft tofu stew with oysters and springy cellophane noodles are big hits, too.
