Prune, please come to San Francisco

I called a friend of mine yesterday and caught him in the middle of making his fantasy football picks. I'm not much for football, but I didn't want to be left out of the fun—so when I got back to my desk I tweeted the following: "If you could snap your fingers and your dream restaurant would be created here in SF, what would it be? Please don't say pizzeria." (By the way, if you're not following our food Twitter feed @7x7bitsbites you are missing some wild times). The imagining of a fantasy San Francisco restaurant is one of my favorite hobbies.

In true style, Foreign Cinema is doing it up for their 10th anniversary. We're talking magicians, dancers, henna artists, acrobats, jugglers and, of course, plentiful cocktails and bites from the Foreign Cinema kitchen.

Proceeds from the evening will support the Bay Area nonprofit organization, DrawBridge, which is committed to providing creative art programs for homeless children and youth.

The Best Outdoor Dining Spots in the City

(article)

It finally feels like summer in SF. Here are the best spots to eat (and drink) outdoors.

Slanted Door
The best news we've heard in a while? Fourty-four seats have just opened up on the Slanted Door's patio, overlooking the waterfront. An order of summer rolls, cold beef carpaccio with peanuts and lime and cellophane noodles with fresh crab, make perfect warm-weather fare. Cocktail aficionados will appreciate the ice program here too; just ask.

New Mexican at Nopalito

Nopales in Nopa? Sí! Plus totopos,  carnitas, gorditas and more.

Nopales in Nopa? Sí! Plus totopos,  carnitas, gorditas and more.

What Nopalito doesn’t have (flour tortillas, burritos, a salsa bar, a jukebox) says as much about it as what it does (homemade yellow corn tortillas, from-scratch queso fresco, a heated patio and free parking). In a city where the taqueria is considered the benchmark for Mexican food, people will inevitably make the comparison, but what the owners of Nopa have done with their second venture is to Mexican as Out the Door is to Vietnamese: a tribute to authenticity mixed with a lot of California.

The Rise of Miss Saigon

(blog)
Stefanie Michejda

Make no mistake—Miss Saigon isn’t going to revolutionize the dodgy block on which it sits (at the corner of Sixth and Mission streets). It is, however, a good place to get lunch if you’re tired of the options at the Westfield SF Centre. The utilitarian, but spic-and-span, dining room is run by an efficient workforce that bustles about, delivering Vietnamese coffee and fussing (in a good way) over the guests.

Anchor & Hope Restaurant Opens Downtown

Anchor & Hope, from the team that brought us Salt House and Town Hall, docks downtown.

Anchor & Hope, from the team that brought us Salt House and Town Hall, docks downtown.

If you're opening a restaurant, one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is tapping into what diners want. Sounds obvious, but satisfying the desires of the fickle masses is no mean feat. Front-of-the-house man Doug Washington and chefs (and brothers) Mitchell and Steve Rosenthal have nailed it thus far: Their first restaurants, Town Hall and Salt House, remain two of the city's most beloved, owing to approachable menus that have such duh-it's-delicious dishes as fried chicken, braised short ribs and crispy shrimp.

Stuck in a brunch rut? Head over to Paul K in Hayes Valley to break in their brand-new brunch. Maybe the brioche French toast, or the duck confit with butterball potato hash and a poached duck egg? Whatever you choose, accompany it with $10 bottomless mimosas or Bloody Mary’s, and prepare to have a very good morning.

Best Reason to Drink Your Veggies: Orson

(article)

Keeping up with the latest libation can be a full-time job in this town, where bartenders are so beloved that we've even revived a special name for them—mixologists. Jackie Patterson is one of the best of the bunch, and for the time being she's calling the bar at Orson home. That's where you'll find one of her latest creations, the celery gimlet—an inspired mix of Martin Miller's gin, celery and lime agave.
