The Eater Wrap: Korean Tacos, Red's Java House and Keller's #12 Spot


Welcome back to our partnership with Eater. For this weekly Friday column, Eater editor Paolo Lucchesi gives his report on all the restaurant news that's fit to print, including the best restaurants in the whole world, crucial Twittering, sad shutters and yet another week in the alternate universe of Alice Waters.

1) S. Pellegrino's annual, well-regarded list of the world's top restaurants dropped on Monday, and though Thomas Keller unsurprisingly remained atop the American representatives, it was his Per Se (#6 overall) that took top honors on U.S. soil, not the French Laundry (#12). Spain's El Bulli claimed the top spot oveall for the fourth year in a row, while two other locals nabbed spots on the list: Chez Panisse (#59) and Manresa (#93).

2) There's a new(ish) feature over at Eater SF called a Moveable Tweet, wherein memorable—and/or troubling—Twitter updates from big names in the food industry are highlighted. So far, crucial memos include Grant Achatz on the importance of resume spell-check, Dosa's Anjan Mitra on the dearth of Disneyland dining options and Ruth Reichl's weekly cat updates. You can't stop Twitter; you can only hope to contain it.

3) Just another week in the delicious world of Alice Waters. After the Chez Panisse matron figured out the Middle East crisis (oh thank god), the NY Post decided that Alice and her food police contingent are really just "an exclusive clique of anorexic cheerleaders [that] think they're better than you."

4) Notable shutters from the past week or so include upscale brunch destination the Terrace at the Ritz-Carlton and Brick, the latter which will reemerge in a week or two as another branch of Fly Bar.

5) But it's not all sad, shuttery news: local institution Red's Java House is finally extending hours to 6pm. $11 Anchor Steam pitchers on the water, anyone?

6) Food Network announced its new slate of programming, including a series starring none other than Chris Cosentino. Come this summer, you can watch the Incanto chef race through challenges in a new show called Chef vs. City. Another show you'll kinda have to watch: What Would Brian Boitano Make?

7) The Korean taco boom that began in Southern California has finally arrived in San Francisco, and it's highly possible that the trend already tiresome. Thanks, LA.
