The Outer Sunset Comes Out of "Bleakness"

By

The New York Times Travel Section dedicated a photo essay last Sunday to our very own Outer Sunset, repping driftwood hotspots like Mollusk Surf, Trouble Coffee, General Store and Danny Hess' sustainable surfboard shop.

Though writer Rachel Levin used "bleak" in a transformative context (her headline was: "In San Francisco, a bleak neighborhood is revived"), you can practically hear the Twitter outcry from the outerlands from locals reacting to this casting. The Ocean Beach Bulletin has gathered up some of the best tweets. And over on Curbed, SF Appeal Editor and Publisher Eve Bately claims the Outer Sunset "is not as foggy as everyone thinks," in an ongoing series the site runs on the city's neighborhoods.

What say you to the term "bleak?" (Outer Sunset resident Lianne Milton, who shot the series for the Times, lamented that it rained all day during the shoot. Obviously, that didn't help the cause).
