The Wine Country Fights Breast Cancer

The Wine Country Fights Breast Cancer

By

October is official Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), which is an annual health campaign to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research, prevention, and hopefully one day find a cure. Over the years, Napa Valley wineries and businesses have given a great deal to support the fight against breast cancer and we’d like to honor a few that maintained this tradition in 2011.

For the past 2 years J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines has funded more than 2,000 mammograms by donating $2 from each bottle of Sauvignon Blac and Cabernet Savignon to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Their hard work and generosity began after Carol Lohr, late wife of founder Jerry Lohr, passed away from breast cancer in 2008 and Their campaign, Touching 2000 Lives, continues to save lives.

The women of Salvestrin Winery completed the 3- day, 60-mile Susan G Komen Walk For the Cure and raised almost $23K for the fight against breast cancer. "For six months, Team Salvestrin Winery trained and raised money for breast cancer awareness...   We tackled the walk full force equipped with body glide, extra socks and Salvestrin wine, of course. We laughed, cried, drank and walked and walked and walked.  What an incredible experience!"– Shannon Salvestrin

Napa Valley Naturals  is also a long time supporter of Susan G. Komen For the Cure and has raised over $200,000 for the cause by donating $1 from each bottle of their Organic Reserve Cuvée Olive oil and $.50 cents for each bottle of Organic Reserve Cuvée Vinegar.

Wente Vineyards  supported the fight by donating wine to Yelp’s Pink Party Charity in support of Breast Cancer Connections. The event took place on Tuesday October, 4th at the Boiler House Restaurant  where 150 of Yelp’s most active and influential yelpers enjoyed fantastic food accompanied by Wente Vineyards wine, live music and sunset bay views.

Domaine Chandon , in partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, is hosting the 6th annual Pink Party benefitting breast cancer treatments at the local Queen of the Valley Medical Foundation. This year’s party will feature a fashion show showcasing Whitney Port’s evening collections, an auction, and an elaborate étoile Rosé reception.  During the reception, James Beard Nominee and Michelin-starred Chef Perry Hoffman will serve savory seasonal hors d’oeuvres paired with Chandon’s finest.

In 2007 the women of Peju  decided to create Peju Pink, a wine that raises money for and honors the many lives that have been touched by breast cancer. Since, Peju has donated nearly $60,000 to breast cancer organizations from both the sales of the Peju Pink wine and through participation in the Avon Walk  for Breast Cancer in San Francisco and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Napa. The small production of Peju Pink retails for $22.00 per bottle and is available exclusively in Peju’s tasting room and online.

There are many others out there donating so please leave a comment and let us know who they are!
