Ah, summer, with all its fog. Thankfully, somewhere out there in a town near us they’re growing heirloom tomatoes so we can at least pretend. At Millennium’s heirloom tomato dinner on August 26 you can get your fix with a multicourse extravaganza devoted to Brandywines, Green Zebras and Sungolds. Get ‘em while it’s…er…hot.
Get Real, Eat Real
This weekend, if you’re not Outside Lands-ing it, head across the bridge to Oakland’s Jack London Square for the three-day Eat Real festival (August 28-30), where taco trucks, fresh produce, craft foods, ice cream and NorCal beer will be in attendance. Some events are ticketed, so be sure to visit the site for more information.
On August 29 you have another excuse to get our of San Francisco—and a good one at that: the heirloom BLT bar and 2008 Hill Family Estate Sauvignon Blanc release party at Bardessono in Yountville. Imagine this: 40 varieties of tomatoes, 10 types of heirloom basil, 15 varied sea salts from around the world, fresh mozzarella, wood-fired bread and, oh yeah, a bacon bar. Oh yeah. In the Italian Tradition
If by Sunday, August 30, you haven’t reached your bacon saturation point, you can head on over to Piccino for their ferragosto party, a homage to the Italian summer tradition of knocking off work for the month of August. How civilized! They will be roasting a whole pig in la caja china and grilling corn and peppers alongside…and did we mention the free-flowing rosé? You want to get in on this. You’re a Peach
Yup, it’s high summer now, time for a peach tasting and preserves swap at Omnivore Books. On September 3 Gayle Okumura Sullivan of Dry Creek Peach and Produce will be at the bookshop offering samples of her wares. Bring a few jars of your home-canned wonders and swap them with other canning enthusiasts. The event is free and runs from 6 to 7 p.m.
