This Week's Hottest Events: American Idiot, Jenny Lewis, and SF in the Movies

By

Theater
American Idiot
Green Day comes home to the Bay Area with this Broadway coming-of-age tale based on their multiplatinum album of the same name. If you didn't catch the Grammy and Tony Award-winning musical when it premiered at Berkeley Rep in 2009, here's your big chance.
When: Tues. 6/12–Sun. 7/8
Where: Orpheum Theatre, 1192 Market St.

Classical
SF Opera Summer Series
The SF Opera begins its summer season with Nixon in China, an original work by Bay Area composer John Adams. Later, the stage will be set for Attila, a collaboration with Milan's La Scala. Beginners will find an easy opera intro in Mozart's The Magic Flute, sung entirely in English and colorfully remained by visual artist Jun Kaneko (whose giant heads are on view outside the opera house).
When: Through Sun. 7/8
Where: War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Ave.

Film
Gregory Peck at Pacific Film Archive
Dapper gentleman and UC Berkeley alum Gregory Peck will come to life onscreen at his alma mater. The soft-spoken English major graced the stage at Cal's Little Theater before going on to star in more than fifty films, becoming an iconic figure much like Cary Grant and Gary Cooper. Now you have the chance to catch him on the big screen in his big hits as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and as Joe Bradley in Roman Holiday. Or see him for the first time in The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit.
When: Wed. 6/13–Fri. 6/29
Where: Pacific Film Archive, 2575 Bancroft Way, Berkeley

Local
TOKYObay at Rare Device
SF watch and accessories brand TOKYObay (celeb fans include Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, and Helena Bonham Carter) recently relaunched their retail site and now features a "Handmade" section of limited-edition collabs. To celebrate, they'll be throwing a shindig at Rare Device with host (and OnTheRacks fashion blogger) Laura Ellner. RSVP to amber@tokyobayinc.com.
When: 6:30-9:30 p.m., Thurs. 6/14
Where: Rare Device, 600 Divisadero St.

Film
The Woman in the Fifth
Set in Paris' Fifth Arrondissement, this thriller stars an older (but no less hunky) Ethan Hawke as a writer who falls trap to the spell of a mysterious woman in the City of Light. Dark and creepy, the film is an adaptation of Douglas Kennedy's international bestseller.
When: Fri. 6/15–Thurs. 6/21
Where: SF Film Society Cinema, 1746 Post St.

Music
Another Night in Treme
Jazz aficionados, take note. Another Night in Treme brings out New Orleans music legends and all-stars from the HBO series Treme. The third season doesn't start until fall, so get your fix of Dr. John, The Soul Rebels, Ivan Neville, and more at this SFJAZZ show.
When: 8 p.m., Fri. 6/15
Where: Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway, Oakland

Music
Jenny Lewis
The endlessly charming Troop Beverly Hills star and Rilo Kiley sensation (I have a major girl crush) had to cancel her "I Heart Cali" tour last fall, but she's back with a show that's going to be twice as big. Get tickets to the singer-songwriter's Henry Miller Library show and make a weekend in Big Sur, or see her in an intimate show at the Swedish American Hall.
When: Fri. 6/15 and 8 p.m., Sat. 6/16
Where: Henry Miller Library, 48603 Hwy. 1, Big Sur and Swedish American Hall, 2170 Market St.

Exhibit
"The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of: San Francisco and the Movies"
Hitchcock devotees will be lining up on June 14 for a glimpse of 79-year-old Kim Novak at the Standing Ovations gala where she'll be honored with a San Francisco Cinematic Icon Award. Then, on Saturday, film buffs will flock to the Old Mint, where this companion exhibit will recognize all of the many movies shot here in our fair city. The showcase will underline the Bay Area's importance in movie history with a display of vintage photos and rare film noir posters from the collection of local historian Eddie Muller.
When: Sat. 6/16–Sun. 6/24
Where: The Old Mint, 88 Fifth St.

Music
Scissor Sisters
Donna Summers, Elton John, and Bee Gees fanatics will be proud to know that the Scissor Sisters are still keeping disco and dance music alive and kicking. Hear all the new tracks from their latest, Magic Hour, live, so you can finally retire "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" for "Baby Come Home."
When: 8 p.m., Sun. 6/17
Where: The Fox, 1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland
