Beyond the Possible
A church that embraces jazz, gay rights, and the antiwar movement sounds too good to be true, but the Glide Memorial Methodist Church in SF has been doing just that for the past 50 years. Founders Reverend Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani share how their unique church has evolved into a diverse congregation of individuals from all walks of life in their book Beyond the Possible. Learn how the duo created a new spirituality from the confines of conventional religion to become the church praised by the likes of Harvey Milk and Maya Angelou.

Volunteer
California State Parks Foundation's Earth Day
Throw on an old pair of jeans, and get outside to celebrate the earth in an altruistic way at the 16th annual Earth Day Restoration & Clean Up. Since 1998, volunteers have contributed more than 326,582 hours and raised $4.3 million for this Earth Day program. With continuous cuts to their funding, these neglected parks need our help more than ever. Feel good about waking up early this weekend.
When: 8:30 a.m., Sat. 4/13
Where: Bay Area State Parks (see full list of volunteer sites on website)

Music
Poliça
Minneapolis indie rockers Poliça promise moody, electronic dance beats to get you swaying. Last year's Give You the Ghost had the music world talking—Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Rolling Stone both praised lead singer Channy Leaneagh's tender voice, which cascades over a sea of keys, bass, and percussion. You'd be wise to keep your eyes on these up-and-comers.
When: 9 p.m., Sat. 4/12
Where: Mezzanine, 444 Jessie St.
