This Week's Hottest Events: John Waters, Hugh Jackman, and Fleet Foxes

John Waters
The man behind cult classics like Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, and Cecil B. Demented will dirty up the JCC with his crass humor. If sick and twisted is not your thing, check out Mayor Ed Lee at the Commonwealth Club instead.
When: 7 p.m., Tues. 5/3
Where: Jewish Community Center, 3200 California St.

Hugh Jackman
The Aussie actor, better known as Wolverine, is swinging through San Francisco for a limited two-week run at the Curran Theatre. But instead of X-Men action and adventure, he'll be performing his favorite Broadway music numbers backed by a 17-piece orchestra. More on that here.
When: Tues. 5/3 - Sun. 5/15
Where: Curran Theatre, 445 Geary St.

Fleet Foxes
Just two days after the release of their much anticipated second album, Helplessness Blues, the Fleet Foxes will touch down in SF as part of their first North American tour since 2009. Tickets are technically sold out, but where there's a will, there's a way.
When: 8 p.m., Thurs. 5/5
Where: The Fox Theater, 1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland

Portugal. the Man
The Portland experimental rock band has been gaining traction over the past year or so, but if "out-there" isn't your thing, local indie band Social Studies and Brazilian soul songstress CéU are also in town.
When: 9 p.m., Fri., 5/6
Where: The Fillmore, 1805 Geary Blvd.

Zhong Biao
The artist—who work has been reproduced in The Economist and for events like the recent World Cup in South Africa—will have his first solo show since his American debut in 2007. The exhibit, dubbed "Reflected on Air," will feature paintings tied to the idea of time.
When: Sat. 5/7 - Tues. 6/28
Where: Frey Norris Gallery, 161 Jessie St.

Sunday Streets
The annual outdoor fest hits the Mission this weekend, and if the weather holds up, you'll want to grab your bike and go. Check out the site for info on free bike and skate rentals.
When: 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun. 5/8
Where: Valencia and 24th streets

Elvis Costello
For the first time in 25 years, the infamous singer-songwriter, will ask audience members to the stage to spin a giant game-show wheel, which will determine what songs Costello and the Imposters will play. Sunday's show is sold-out, but it looks like you can still snag tickets for Monday night's performance.
When: 8 p.m., Sun. 5/8 and Mon. 5/9
Where: The Fox, 1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland
