Three Indie Films to Scope Out This Week

Three Indie Films to Scope Out This Week

By

Escape the reality of your work week and plan to see one of these three indie films playing limited runs around the city.

They Call it Myanmar: Lifting the Curtain

Clandestinely filmed over the span of 2 years with a camcorder, this doc plays up the beauty and personality of the closed country as it finally inches into the modern age. The footage is rough in spots, but the film’s heart is certainly in the right place. Director and producer to appear at select showings, check the website. Plays through 4/12 at the Bridge Theatre, 3010 Geary Blvd @ Blake, (415) 267-4893.

Free Men

Notable for its tale of Muslim/Jewish collaboration not before told on-screen, this World War II drama has enough intrigue and action to keep it moving but its exotic Moroccan locations and the renegade charisma of lead Tahar Rahim are where it really shines. Playing now at Lumiere Theatre, 1572 California St. @ Polk, (415) 885-3201.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

It’s not new this weekend, but there’s still time to see this amazing documentary. The alarmingly high 98% on Rotten Tomatoes is gospel—it’s almost impossible not to like this film. It’s a moving tale of honor and family, but most importantly… FOOD PORN. It won’t look as delicious on the small screen! Playing now at Embarcadero Center Cinema, 1 Embarcadero, (415) 267-4893.
