Wine Country by way of tuk tuk? From buses and bikes to Segways and hot air balloons, there are many ways to taste. But we bet you've never seen Napa like this.
Brand-new Wine Country tour company Laces and Limos has arrived on the scene Instagram-ready with its fleet of open-air tuk-tuks—think chic, modern-day versions of the rickshaw that also happen to be 100 percent electric. Each tuk-tuk can carry you and up to five of your friends (plus the driver), keeping you all plenty cozy with heated seats and a waterproof hood. You can rosé all day, no matter the weather.
Once just tourists to the Valley themselves, founders and partners Michelle Helms and Dieter Pietsch considered many European travel destinations before deciding to settle in Napa and start their business here.
"We always sort of had a sweet spot for Napa Valley. It's a place unlike any other in the world that attracts every demographic," says Helms. "We moved up here a year ago, and spent the last year exploring as locals."
Because the tri-wheeled vehicles can't be taken on highways above 40 mph, they won't make the traditional trip up Napa's Highway 29, but that limitation enables Laces and Limos to offer a different kind of Wine Country experience.
Instead of braving the traffic en route to Napa Valley's over-hyped castle winery, why not tuk-tuk around downtown Napa, which is buzzing with modern tasting rooms, restaurants, and wine bars. Laces and Limos has partnered with local hot spots like Acumen (part tasting room, part art gallery), Cru @ the Annex (popcorn and wine pairing, anyone?), and new wine bar Compline (rhymes with Compton), which offers one-hour wine education classes.
Prefer the scenic route? Discover Coombsville, a hilly up-and-coming growing region with a Tuscan vibe that's mostly uncharted by tourists. A stone's throw from downtown Napa and easily accessible by back roads, Coombsville is home to wineries Caldwell Vineyard, Shadybrook Estate and Italics.
Choose from one of four packages, ranging from a basic two-and-a-half-hour ride ($55 per person) to a robust full-day journey (five-plus hours, $129 per person) that includes tastings in Napa and Coombsville as well as an optional bento box from Morimoto.
