1. Firing on all cylinders
With four animal heads mounted on the wall, baristas at the just-opened Four Barrel Café are bound to get questions about the coffeehouse’s interior design.  Save your inquiries for September 27, when Jeremy Tooker, ruler of the roast, hosts a tour of his hunter-gatherer ornamented Mission café.  Book reservations online and join Jeremy for a short presentation and tour at 11 a.m., followed by a “cupping” with the master. 

2. Pig out on politics
John McCain fans may want to sit out Demolicious ’08, unless the line-up of participating restaurants and wineries entices them to change their vote.  Zuni Café, Jardinière, Laiola, Edmunds St. John winery and many more are part of the campaign that says, “Yes We Can.” They will treat Barack Obama supporters with great food and wine at the Terra Gallery on September 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Donate a little or a lot online, then join other dems and toast to the new regime.

3. The slow down challenge
Ever tasted a California peach straight from the tree or a wild Pacific crab cooked right after it’s caught?  Then you know how fresh, local products make all the difference in taste.  On September 30, Bon Appetit Management will challenge chefs in more than 400 cafés and restaurants nationwide to prepare a 100% local meal with ingredients produced within 150 miles of each café.  In San Francisco, treat yourself to a complete, local lunch at the de Young or at one of the many USF cafés on campus. 

4. Shop and savor
Foodies and fans of The Food Network can watch Dave Lieberman get fresh with local farmers at Macy’s in Santa Clara at the Valley Fair Mall on September 27.  The Good Deal star will take local, sustainable products and do a live, Dave Does-like session right there, in-store beginning at 2 p.m.  There is no charge for the demo or food samples but a purchase of $50 or more you will get you a personalized copy of his latest cookbook, Dave’s Dinners.

5. No wine-ing during the week
There’s no excuse not to unwind with a mid-week glass of vino when Frisée has half- priced bottles of wine.  Whites, reds and all the rosés in between will be 50 percent off the regular wine list price beginning at 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday and continuing all evening long. Because, let’s face it, sometimes hump day comes early.

6. A wine for all seasons
Seasons Restaurant in San Francisco (in the Four Seasons Hotel) will team up with Napa Valley’s Shafer Vineyards for a special dinner on October 2.  Doug Shafer will take guests on a taste tour of his wines while Chef Mark Richardson accents the journey with an innovative five-course menu.  The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m., with rabbit prepared three ways and a splash of chardonnay, and conclude hours later with a decadent dessert and port wine. 7. Pretty in Pink
Guys, it’s OK to wear pink to this party.  Actually, you’ll be an outcast if you don’t.  About 400 pink partiers will be sipping sparkling rosé on the outdoor terrace of Domaine Chandon on October 2.  Étoile, the fine dining restaurant located at the winery, will provide small bites while DJ Dukes provides the tunes from 7:00 p.m. to midnight.  Tickets are $50, benefit breast cancer research and may be purchased on the Chandon website.
