If a slightly pornographic headline didn't get your attention, maybe this will: On Friday, Oct. 23, 111 Minna Galley will open its doors to a colorful breast cancer fundraiser, "Beats for Boobs," comprising a fashion show; bumping DJ lineup; nibbles from local culinary talent; performances by hula hoopers, breakdancers and the like; and much, much more. The all-night event runs from 6pm through 2am.
"Beats for Boobs" is a benefit founded by Juliana Cochnar in 2003 in honor of her mother, a breast cancer survivor. Beginning with "Barbie and the Boob Brigade"--"Barbie" being Juliana's mother--Juliana and friends raised money and awareness for breast cancer in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. From this team fundraising effort, "Beats for Boobs" was born. In its sixth year, the annual event seeks to educate the community on breast cancer through the collaborative celebration of art, fashion, food and music.
This year's theme is "Green is the new Pink," focusing on healthy living and recognizing that environmental toxins are one of the leading causes of cancer. "Beats for Boobs" will also teach attendees how they can reduce exposure in their own lives.
All proceeds from "Beats for Boobs" benefit the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund (BGEF) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. BCEF provides short-term emergency financial assistance to low-income San Franciscans battling breast cancer and also makes referrals to agencies that can provide longer-term care.
Tickets can be purchased on the "Beats for Boobs" website: $25 gets you admission and a spin on the "Boobie Wheel;" $50 gets you a full VIP package.
