SFO Goes Vegas

By

Next time you're stuck at San Francisco airport trying to kill time before your flight, consider hitting the slots. No, the airport has not morphed into a full-fledged casino, but it has introduced an exhibit, For Amusement Only: Slot Machines and Other Gambling Devices of the Mechanical Age, that illustrates the technological and artistic innovations of mechanical gambling machines.

More than 90 gambling devices are on display throughout the airport, including 19th and 20th century slot machines, guessing banks, coin drops, poker machines and punchboards, all courtesy of Joe Welch's San Bruno American Antique Museum. Passengers traveling through terminal 3 will have the opportunity to glimpse the hardware post-security in Boarding Area F and stap pictures as they breeze by on the moving walkway from now through May.

(You can leave your quarters at home, though; this is merely an exhibit.)
