It's the most wonderful time of the year—time to select San Francisco's favorite charity, as part of our annual contest. We asked readers to vote for their most beloved nonprofits, and this year's numbers were record breaking. But seven charities rose to the top. Each of the finalist organizations work tirelessly to make the Bay Area a better, brighter place, from striving to end gender violence to providing mental health support to the underserved.
San Francisco's twenty-somethings gathered at the W Hotel this past Saturday to party for the greater good at the 2014 San Francisco Social. Nearly 600 attendees slipped into their finest and danced the night away, pausing to bid on a myriad of silent auction packages, sip on a cocktail, and take in the risqué-chic performance by Epic Entertainment.
From merely curious to downright odd, guests were treated to a bevy of sights, tastes, and sounds at Hendrick’s Gin "Emporium of the Unusual" Cocktails and Oddities event. Held at the historical Old Mint building in San Francisco, the three-day event allowed partiers to experience Hendrick's cocktails alongside a modern sideshow of magicians, illusionists, and curiousity shop-esque trinkets that would make the Mad Hatter’s head spin.
The eve before Halloween, Bay Area animal lovers and their furry friends gathered at the San Francisco SPCA’s Mission Campus for “There’s No Place Like Home,” a costume party for two-legged and four-legged (and even some three-legged) guests. Many families coordinated costumes with their pets (a la Princess Leia and Chewbacca), while others let their pet bask alone in the fancy-dress limelight.

But, a new exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum explores the intentionally gritty style of photography that originated in post-WWII Japan, upon dramatic social and political changes due to the American Occupation, modernization, and rapid economic development.
