Brewed from a centuries-old American recipe handed down from Native Americans, the new hand-crafted, organic Root is the first "authentic" liqueur to be produced in this country since pre-Prohibtion.
The recipe for ROOT has been resurrected by DIY collective Art in the Age. They've also created another liqueur, SNAP, that's more earthy. And now Moshi Moshi's bar manager Tiffany Doesken has used Root and Snap in two delicious recipes for you to try at home. For more recipe ideas, click here and here.
You may remember our epic mixology competition with SVEDKA a few weeks ago, pitting SF bartenders against one another in the race to create the tastiest SVEDKA cocktail. We asked you to vote for your favorite, and you did. The winner by a landslide was Aom Aphiradee of Ozone Thai Restaurant & Lounge in SoMA, who created the tasty, ginger and basil-infused Swedish Smile, inspired by her Thai heritage.
Our sister magazine SPIN and popchips have teamed up to support local bands through an initiative called popup live, a fan-driven competition designed to expose new music. Beginning this morning, they've published over 250 free tracks from bands in five cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco) that popchips and Spin think are poised to hit the big time. Check out which bands made the San Francisco cut on popchips' SF facebook page, and vote for your favorite tracks.
Every single download counts as a vote for that band, and on September 12th, the four bands with the most downloads from each city will advance to the semi-finals and win $500 cash prize as well as a "pop up live kit" to help them create their own unique pop up live concert. So cast your vote for the local band you think is going to be the next big thing!
And for this week's popchips pop culture pop quiz we're paying homage to Bay Area-bred bands who have made it big time. (Every week this summer we're testing your local knowledge with SF Pop Culture Pop Quizzes. Follow and tweet to @popchips and @popchipsSF for your chance to win a...wait for it...month's supply of popchips.)
Here's this week's question:
Operaphiles, get ready for the SF Opera's 2011-12 Season BRAVO! Club Opening Gala next week on September 9. Get your hair done, don your fanciest attire and indulge yourself in a glittering night starting at 5pm with cocktail receptions and an elegant seated dinner accompanied by a performance of Puccini's classic, Turandot.
On August 31st, 7x7 and cover-model venue OSHA Lounge Embarcadero joined forces to host San Francisco's most prominent figures in the nightlife and entertainment circles, celebrating the newest edition of our must-have guide to the city's bars, clubs, lounges and more!
VIP guests enjoyed complimentary specialty cocktails made with Pisco Porton; ice cold Sapporo beer; and delicious selections from Osha Thai's newly revised catering menu of exotic tastes.
We've just stumbled upon an awesome new power couple: Off The Grid's food truck army and horse racing at Golden Gate Fields this Saturday, September 3. Time to dust off your Kentucky Derby hat and get ready for a day of throwing down bets with a cocktail in hand! They've partnered up for four entire Saturdays, so you can hustle over to the race tracks (if you've never been to GG Fields, you're seriously missing out) to get your fill of 30 of the Bay Area's finest food trucks–Hapa SF, Curry Up Now, 3-Sum Eats and more–while celebrating a classic American tradition.
With Tahoe just a breath away from the Bay Area, it's easy to pop over for a long weekend of relaxation. The icing on the cake? A luxurious place to stay tucked in the mountains bathed in gorgeous fall colors on the shores of South Lake and minutes away from all the action. You can get that at Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe, which offers a ton of travel packages so visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of Tahoe and tailor their stays to their moods.

Think your dog is a beauty queen trapped in a canine's body? Let your pup unleash her inner fabulosity at the SF Design Center's first annual Paw Parade on September 8th. It's a doggie fashion runway show in which all eyes will be on pets strutting their stuff in outfits and accessories made with the amazing fabrics and textiles from SFDC's world-class showrooms.
Admit it, you've pumped up the volume and belted out Alanis Morissette's "Ironic" behind rolled-up car windows at least once. On September 1st, you can see the seven-time Grammy Award winner live at Davies Hall — for a good cause. She'll join Jay Leno on stage to raise funds for a new home for UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, one of the nation's best children's medical facilities. When it's completed in 2014, the new 183-bed medical complex will set a new world-class standard for patient and family centered health care, safety, sustainability and translational medicine.
