Best Bets This Week in Live Bay Area Music

If you’re like me, you need something to make you forget about Sunday night’s Breaking Bad episode*. Like… live music! (*This week’s column is sponsored by the Coalition for a Walter White-Free Society)

Just show up at any local venue this week and prepare to be dazzled by world-class music. It’s (almost) that simple.

Children of San Francisco, you are blessed. Seriously. There are 40 shows that could have made this week’s list. Don’t take these shows for granted:

We bring you this week’s edition of the Best Concert Bets from annoyingly sunny Los Angeles, site of this past weekend’s FYF Music Festival. We witnessed a few of this week’s acts with our own eyes, and we can report they’re all still rockin hard in the festival world. Put together your own Faux Yeah Festival in SF this week with these shows.

Major props to L.A.’s FYF Festival for drawing a clown car's worth of talent to the West Coast this week. The bourgeoning alternative/indie music fest has turned into a mini-Coachella, with similar curatorial inclinations to our own Treasure Island Music Festival. More importantly, it's an incidental coup for Bay Area music fans.

Best Bets in Live Music, Outside Lands Hangover Edition

Coconut water, people. Can’t stress that enough. The only other option to cure your Outside Lands hangover is, of course, that old hair of the dog tonic, additional live music. That and a Bloody Mary, and you’ll be fine. Here’s our five-step program to recovery:

YES. Outside Lands is here, reverent party people. But if you’ve got your ticket, we’ll assume you’re plenty aware of how much fun is in store this weekend at Golden Gate Park.

Deep breaths. This past weekend was extremely emotional for the nostalgically inclined. Postal Service at the Greek. Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake at Candlestick. Weezer at America’s Cup Pavilion.

It’s officially the heart of outdoor concert season, regardless of what our summer weather has to say about it. The Greek, Stern Grove, Candlestick Park (!), America’s Cup Pavilion, Golden Gate Park with Outside Lands on the horizon…each venue hosts super hotly anticipated shows here in the coming weeks. Let’s get out there and dance ‘til we’re warm.

Before we get into this week’s best live music bets, a very enthusiastic kudos to the folks who staged another successful Phono Del Sol mini-fest at Potrero Del Sol Park on Saturday. Thee Oh Sees, Marnie Stern and YACHT headlined a perfect day of live music set to the visual backdrop of kids owning the skate park behind one of the stages. More please.
