For our column Jams We Love, we're turning you onto the songs that keep us going every day. Today, we're celebrating the 20th birthday of one of the best indie record labels around, Thrill Jockey. SF's own Chuck Prophet had his beloved Fender Squire Telecaster stolen on August 14th, right out of his van, and there's a $600 reward for its return. Prophet says "I purchased it in 1984. It cost something like $150 at the time. I don't think it has a serial number. It's just a lucky guitar. Like a lucky pen. I've never played a gig or made a record without it." Become a Master of Making Things at the Skills Exchange Workshop
Remember being forced to read Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self Reliance" essay in school? You may have been rolling your eyes then, but since moving out of your parents' house, we bet you've learned the fine art of hustling to make it in the big, bad world. In the spirit of self-reliance, we're stoked for the upcoming Skill Exchange, a three-day pop-up workshop series taking place September 7, 8, and 9. Because it never hurts to teach yourself some new tricks, right?
East Brother Island: A Lovers’ Retreat
For romantics and history buffs, the East Brother Light Station and Victorian Bed & Breakfast is a one-night getaway par excellence. This is a rare chance to cuddle up in a 133-year-old working lighthouse, where the summer months are mercifully free of foghorn noise, in one of just five updated Victorian-era rooms. “Guests say it’s like stepping back in time,” says innkeeper Peter Berkhout, who runs the B&B with his wife (and chef) Dina.
