Bay Area Sports Beat: What You Need to Know Right Now

It all looked so normal for David Lee: A run-of-the-mill drive to the basket, a foul and an awkward landing.

Bonus basketball is back in the Bay – time to party like it’s 2007.

Flags were raised, bling was given, nostalgic highlights were on repeat and the Giants even wore gold to commemorate the whole thing.

ROMO

In some circles, today is considered a national holiday.

Cal’s dance wasn’t quite of the shut-the-club-down variety, but it at least its dance went on longer than a slow dance between awkward junior high kids.

If you can’t beat them, steal them?

On the heels of the San Francisco 49ers’ 34-31 Super Bowl loss, the locals have already put their best foot forward in the hope to put last season’s bitter ending to rest.

This week, the 49ers exchanged a sixth-round draft pick for Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin in an effort to make a Super-Bowl return, albeit, with a better outcome than last time around. Boldin had six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco 49ers

Alex Smith will never command the same punch-anybody-in-the-face-who-speaks-ill-of-him-like lore that Joe Montana has in the Bay Area, but it’s hard not to ignore a few of the parallels between Smith’s Kansas City exit and Montana’s.

Bay Area Sports Beat: The Warriors' Sleeves and What You Need to Know Right Now

Golden State Warriors

Your shoulders are missing, Golden State Warriors.

Underscored, perhaps, by their World Series-winning and Super Bowl runner-up counterparts, the Warriors have been in the business of making statements in the NBA this season after undergoing a lull of mediocrity in recent years.

Their recent statement was both with an exclamation point and, well, something else entirely. In breaking a 16-game losing streak against the perennially successful San Antonio Spurs, the likely playoff-bound Warriors both showed the NBA that they’re not messing around and that they’re fine with bucking modern basketball fashion trends.

All is right in the world again: Baseball is back.

Well, almost.

Both local favorites, the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s, reported to Spring Training this week to mark the official beginning to baseball season and an all-important step to erasing the game that shall not be mentioned from the minds of the Bay Area.
