I've come to rely on SOMArts for a running calendar of envelope-pushing events and exhibits (i.e. the Underground Market, monthly Feast of Words literary potlucks, annual Dia de los Muertos extravaganza, not to mention all of the exhibits). A few years ago, curator and gallery director Justin Hoover clued me in to a show idea he was toying with that would make unprecedented use of SOMArt's exhibition space.
This is a rare chance to see the Oscar-nominated actor in conversation with his mother, the acclaimed author and actress Betsy Franco. The two will discuss James' new book A California Childhood, a new-age memoir of personal snapshots, sketches, paintings, poems, and stories. Consider it your opp to get up close and personal with the local stud.
When: 7 p.m., Mon. 5/13
Where: Kepler's, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park
There's one thing that's certain—the Academy of Art always manages to outdo itself. Last night's graduation fashion show took over the old Exploratorium space at the Palace of Fine Arts, filling the venue's halls with students' portfolios and leading the way to the longer-than-life runway.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes its much-anticipated, always impressive annual stop at Berkeley's Cal Performances this month. See the company's sinuous dancers in the Bay Area premiere of Kyle Abraham's Another Night, with music by cheeky jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, along with four showings of the Ailey classic Revelations.
When: Tues. 4/23–Sun. 4/28
Where: Zellerbach Hall, Telegraph Ave. and Bancroft Way (Berkeley)
With everything terrible going on in the world this week, it's about time for stories that are uplifting and inspiring, ones that restore our faith in humanity and incite us to action ourselves.
