When Hip Meets Luxe

In some respects the owners of this San Francisco home, clients of interior designer Melissa Warner Rothblum, aren’t your stereotypical newlyweds. After all, their first home together is a 4,000-square-foot manse in Pacific Heights.
A Modern Family Gives a Monterey Colonial a Fresh Attitude
For 75 years, this Monterey colonial house—a style not too common in San Francisco—has perched on a steep hill in Pacific Heights, where it’s dwarfed by the imposing red brick residences surrounding it. Like some other older homes in the neighborhood, its past is storied with tales of high society and a touch of scandal.
A Former Factory Morphs Into a Badass Sonoma Home

When interior designer Ann Jones purchased a house just a few blocks off the Sonoma Plaza, she was buying potential. "It had been a wood planing mill at the turn of the last century, and then it was a furniture factory," she says.
A Twisted Victorian in San Francisco

At their first meeting, the owners of this 1,500-square-foot flat in San Francisco made it a point to tell architect Karen Curtiss that what they wanted to do to their home didn't make financial sense. "They knew they could buy a house with the money they planned to spend on the condo," Curtiss says. "However, they didn't want to move. The Gayest Buildings in America
Can San Francisco Apartments Get Even Smaller?
Developer Patrick Kennedy is about to complete SmartSpace 2.0, a building comprised of 300-square-foot studio apartments built with prefab technology developed by his Berkeley-based company, Panoramic Interests. And, if the Board of Supervisors passes legislation allowing it, he's set to build SmartSpace 3.0, a micro apartment development that would have 287-square-foot units, the smallest ever in San Francisco and among the smallest in America. Can this be a good idea?
