Behind the loosely guarded fences of Hunters Point Shipyard sits the old San Francisco Police Athletic Club, also known as Building 120, among the decaying relics of the old shipyard.
Early Sunday morning, in the pea-soup thick fog that shrouded SF Bay, more than 2,000 athletes took the plunge from the paddle wheel SF Belle off the Alcatraz shoreline into the 58-degree open water of the Pacific.
This week we left SF behind for the cool, shaded trails of Muir Woods. Just 12 miles across the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods includes 560-acres of park land, six-miles of trails, and the chance to get up close and personal with 600-year-old trees including Coast Redwood, Tanoak, Big Leaf Maple, and California Bay Laurel.
Just over the Golden Gate Bridge are the bucolic hills and rolling surf of West Marin. For this week's Scenes of the City we explored the Marin countryside, from the hidden Nicasio Valley to the seaside escape of Bolinas, plus the serpentine and beautiful Lagunitas Creek.
