Publish Your Own Book at a Low Cost with Blurb
Until quite recently, it would have been difficult and expensive for you to publish your own physical book, especially one filled with photos.
But thanks to San Francisco-based Blurb, and its on-demand publishing platform, you can do so now for as little as $3.95 for a pocket book to $49.95 for a large, 12 by 12-inch coffee table book.
The Startup That Sends The Mechanic To You
Those of us covering startups use the word “disruptive” all the time–probably too frequently in some cases.
But it’s certainly the right descriptor for Your Mechanic, which sends a car mechanic to your home or office to provide repair and maintenance services at roughly half the cost of what you now pay at the shop.
Social Shopping Startup Sneakpeeq Carries 4,000 Indie Brands This Holiday Season
Sneakpeeq is a social shopping marketplace, both on the web and the iPad, that showcases some 4,000 indie brands in home, living and style products.
Founder Henry Kim says he discovered how difficult it was for these smaller brands to reach customers when he visited a large trade show in Las Vegas and saw that they could not get buyers from the major retailers to even visit their booths.
The "Game of Books" Seeks to Incentivize Young Readers
Back when BookLamp launched in August 2011, we called it “a Pandora for books.”
BookLamp is a publishing technology company that developed something called the Book Genome Project, which uses the “DNA of language” to analyze and compare books based on their thematic makeup, character types, and language elements.
This Thanksgiving, Pick the Winners of NFL Games on Pickmoto's Mobile App
A long time ago, when I was growing up in a small town in Michigan, part of the background every Thanksgiving day at my aunt’s house on Oxbow Lake was the Detroit Lions football game on TV.
The Lions still carry on that tradition, as do a few other NFL teams, and thanks to a brand new little startup started by three guys out of their apartment in San Francisco, this Thanksgiving football fans have a new way to enjoy these classic games with others.
Twist Takes the #OMW Tag Out of Real-World Meetings
“Twist is about time,” says founder and CEO Bill Lee. “If you’ve ever wasted time waiting for someone, then you know the problem we are trying to solve.”
Lee says the idea for the app, which is available in iOS and will be in android soon, came to him last year when, as an angel investor, he had around 200 meetings.

Wheelz Enters Car-Sharing Market, Backed by Zipcar and Bill Ford
As of the past month, the car-sharing sector has another serious competitor in San Francisco, as well on numerous campuses around the state. It’s called Wheelz.

StumbleUpon's New Look
It’s been a busy year over at what is arguably the web’s top discovery engine, StumbleUpon.
From its offices in SoMA, the company has relaunched its website, plus apps for the iPhone and iPad, and most recently a new version of its product for Windows 8, for tablets and PCs.
