Instagrammers Capture the Bay Area Debut of Volkswagen's Hella Hyped Electric Microbus

With a proposed 300 miles of all-electric range, VW's new microbus aims to bring a bit of nostalgia to a new era of smartphone-wielding gypsies and coffee shop hipsters.

Earlier this week, a yellow microbus was spotted kicking it in the Haight-Ashbury, and later posing for Instagram pics in front of the GGB. Hoodline reported sightings of the not-yet-released hipster van, noting that its appearance seemed to be part of a commercial shoot. But it was later learned that no permits had been issued for such an endeavor, and no film crews were spotted around the adorably streamlined new van.

This past Saturday, at the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach, VW announced that the so-called I.D. Buzz concept car—a modern homage to the beloved microbus of the '70s—will go into production in 2022 as a fully electric vehicle. Perhaps the concept model was just making an SF pit stop on its way down from the Monterey Peninsula? We suspect this is a clever guerrilla marketing tactic—and it worked, as evidenced by the slideshow below.

Check out the latest iteration of that era-defining mini bus, which feels so right on the streets of SF during the anniversary of the Summer of Love.

Watch the concept car's initial commercial, shot in San Francisco, of course..
