We Wanna Be Friends With: Principal Ballerina Frances Chung

We Wanna Be Friends With: Principal Ballerina Frances Chung

By

Our city is chock-full of interesting people and wild personalities. Overwhelmed by the coolness? Every week we'll pick one standout local we'd love to be friends with to answer seven essential questions about their life in San Francisco.

A ballerina who easily takes down double-doubles? We think we've fallen in love! Frances Chung is a principal dancer for the SF Ballet, and when this exceptionally talented artist isn't rehearsing or performing in the Opera House, she's making the most of living/eat/playing in our wonderful city.

But the British Colombia native has been extra busy with work recently–she'll perform in the US premiere of Cinderella with the SF Ballettomorrow! If you don't get a chance to watch her in Cinderella (at this point only standing room tickets are available), let her We Wanna Be Friends With Q&A be your consolation prize.

1. What neighborhood do you currently call home? Would you ever move or are you happy in your 'hood?

Midtown Terrace (it's right under the magnificent Sutro tower). My five pound chihuahua mutt, Iggy, and I are very happy here with all the wildlife, foliage, and at times, thick fog. I like having the Mission on one side of me and the Sunset on the other.

2. What's your hands-down, absolute favorite thing to eat in SF?

Honey glazed fried chicken wings from San Tung.

3. What's your perfect night on the town?

Dinner at Farina and a movie at the Kabuki Cinema with friends. Then I'd go home and drink some tea, take a bath, and pet my dog…I'm a grandma.

4. When you need a low-key afternoon, where do you go for down time?

On a sunny afternoon I would go to the beach, or drink a coffee with my fiancé, or play fetch with Iggy at Alamo Square. These days are rare during the season though because I am stuck in the Opera House six days a week.

5. What's your favorite place to go on a day trip from the city?

Pacifica, where I have friends and family. I mostly go for the people there and a home-cooked meal, but there are great spots to hike, and Linda Mar is a good beach to learn how to surf (in a really thick wetsuit).

6. Quick-fire round:

Burrito or Burger?

In-N-Out burger. (Double double with grilled onions, please.)

Presidio or Golden Gate Park?

Golden Gate Park.

Bi-Rite or Mitchell's?

Bi-Rite.

Bike or MUNI?

Bike.

Fort Mason or Dolores Park?

Dolores Park.

The Independent or the Fillmore?

Independent.

Baker Beach or Ocean Beach?

Ocean Beach.

7.Three words that describe your life in SF?

Love it all!
